Around Baseball Offseason Edition - Derek Jeter will retire at seasons end

Why wouldn't you just give him a 8-10 yr deal then negotiate again in 6-7 yrs? You think the Cards regret not re-signing Pujols?

Trout has 4 seasons including this til FA. He'll wait it out and see what the freemarket plays is my guess. A-Rod did the same, and he signed a mega deal. I'm sure Trout's agent is telling him something along those lines so LA has a shot to lock him up for maybe up to his first FA year maybe second but there's no way he signs longer.

No, Pujols was signed through his age 31-40 seasons.

Trout be signed through age 22-36 in that scenario, but an 8-10 year deal would probably be best.

Seems like they're only going up to 6 at most right now which buys out 2 FA years.

What about a 15-year deal, only takes him to age 36 or 37.

Yes, risky, but i'll take that chance.

I wouldn't do that. 12 years is the max I would go with Trout. That covers his age 22-33 seasons. Trout could still be a solid player at age 33 so it wouldn't be a burden and there's not the extra risk of him being locked up too far into his 30s.

Reading comprehension much?

Ian Kinsler poops all over the Rangers and Jon Daniels - ESPN

"Daniels is a sleazeball," [Kinsler] says. "He got in good with the owners and straight pushed Ryan out. He thought all the things he should get credit for, Ryan got credit for. It's just ego. Once we went to the World Series, everybody's ego got huge, except for Nolan's."

"I hope [the Rangers] go 0-162."

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Justin Masterson and his agent, Randy Rowley, have made a three- to four-year proposal to the Indians believed to be in the $40-60 million range.
Hoynes says they're waiting to hear back from the Indians, but if the club is serious at all about keeping Masterson, it's hard to imagine them not jumping at that offer. Rowley told CBS Sports' Jon Heyman that the righty "is motivated to stay in Cleveland by his admiration for manager Terry Francona, his strong feelings about his teammates and family situation." Both sides have set an Opening Day deadline for extension talks.

From rotoworld.

That would be a steal in this day and age.

Yes it would be. I remember when Masterson came up with the Red Sox, I never thought much of him, but he has developed into a legit #2 or #3 starter with the Indians.

Steal, I don't think so unless it was 4/40. Ubaldo just signed for 4/50. So anything more than that is bad JMO. That said Ubaldo, is more up and down than Masterson and Masterson has been better recently, but Masterson never had a season even close to Ubaldo's 2010.

Unfortunately for Ubaldo that 2010 season is the only season he's ever had like that. The rest of his career he's been a solid pitcher but nothing spectacular like that 2010 season and that was 4 years ago.

Cards sign Matt Carpenter to a 6 year extension, worth 50-55 million total.

That's a steal provided last year wasnt a fluke.

I meant when you look at what the top pitchers get on the open market.

4/60 at most would be pretty good.

Masterson has never been spectacular. If you rank them by years in fWAR you get

Ubaldo 2010 6.5
Ubaldo 2009 5.6
Masterson 2011 4.3
Ubaldo 2008 3.8
Masterson 2013 3.4
Ubaldo 2011 3.3
Ubaldo 2013 3.2
Masterson 2010 2.1
Masterson 2009 1.9
Masteron 2012 1.9
Ubaldo 2007 (Rookie year
Masterson 08 0.8 (rookie year)
Ubaldo 2012 0.1

Ubaldo has some big risks for sure, but he also has high flying stats. Last 3 years they've been close aside from 2012 where Ubaldo stank and Masterson was OK.

I never said Masterson was better than Ubaldo. I never even compared the two. I was saying the reason Ubaldo didn't get the monster deal he was hoping for was because aside from that one year in 2010 he's been a solid pitcher but not the completely overpowering dominate pitcher he was in 2010.
