Official official offseason thread

I’m not surprised in the least they tried to get deGrom on a short deal. That’s literally AA’s favorite tactic. I’m also not surprised in the least he didn’t accept such a contract.

I think "being in" on a guy can be really misleading during free agent season. Braves threw him an offer (like almost every other team in baseball), played the "hometown discount" angle and were turned down.

As for Contreras, I don't think the Braves sign Pina last off-season if they were really convinced that Contreras is a long term solution at the position. If Murphy somehow lands here, my guess is Contreras will be playing elsewhere.

Remember going into last season, Contreras was thought ti need another season in the minors. He was brought up when Pina went down and way over performed expectations

I hope not. I just think with his bat and more improvement when he catches, he's not as easy to trade for me.

Murphy seems to be a luxury and a costly one unless you're reducing your pitching AAAA prospects, costly contracts or whatever premium prospects you have left. Same with Reynolds and he'd be my target.

Pretty much spot on. Murphy would have been a luxury that would have cost a valuable piece or two. We could use those pieces to get Reynolds.

I’m assuming there’s no way to get Murphy without giving up Grissom or Contreras (ie anyone needed to acquire Reynolds)? If so, then Murphy replaces Contreras who’s used to acquire Reynolds. It’s a wash at catcher and a net gain in the outfield. Then figure out ss.

That’s assuming the A’s are asking for Grissom. They could want Contreras instead and if that’s the case then it would be pointless for us. If it were Grissom I’d guess it would have been done by now.

I think it’s safe to assume that if we’re trading for Murphy then AA has a separate deal lined up for Reynolds or someone of his caliber. Additionally, if AA is ok with parting with Contreras and Grissom to facilitate both deals, it likely doesn’t matter which one goes where as they were both assets being used to secure Murphy and Reynolds.

But apparently we aren't trading for Murphy, at least not anymore. Or there's some 4D chess being played somewhere.

If AA’s quote can be taken at face value, then no, we’re not trading for Murphy. It also doesn’t sound like the quote was vague enough to infer that we are part of a trade for Murphy going elsewhere either.

If the Pirates don't want Contreras, then why would they want Murphy instead? I'm not arguing that Contreras is as good or better than Murphy, but he's no slouch, plus he's cheaper and under control longer. I just don't see the logic in that sort of trade. Pirates would be looking at getting younger, cheaper players if they were trading Reynolds would they not?

My point was more that if we target two guys we like (Murphy and Reynolds), it doesn’t matter who goes where to make that deal happen. Contreras and Grissom would be going out and it doesn’t matter which one goes to Oakland and which one goes to Pittsburgh.

Folks are still discussing a rumor that has been definitively shot down by saying the exact same things we said 2 pages ago before it was definitively shot down.
