I don't know if it's the agent issue, but I think Swanson wanted to hear what was happening directly from Anthopoulos after what supposedly happened last year with Freeman. I don't think anyone can really be sure of what happened in those negotiations and I wouldn't be surprised if Swanson called Freeman for advice.
 
If you could sign Correa and somehow turn Grissom and/or Contreras into Reynolds, the Braves would have pretty much the best offense and defense in the MLB

Reynolds would be a huge add to our LF situation for at least the next 3 years, and as a switch hitter, provides additional balance to our lineup.

Acuna RF
Correa SS
Olson 1B
Riley 3B
Reynolds LF
d'Arnaud C
Albies 2B
Ozuna DH
Harris II CF

And if Ozuna can return to 75 % if the guy he was in 2020, that lineup is super dangerous.

Although, if you keep Contreras along with d'Arnaud and Pina, Contreras shifts into more of the DH role so you can have both him and d'Arnaud in the same line up.

There should be nothing stopping Atlanta from doing this. The team is at the height of its popularity over the last 20 years and is making filthy money. Correa will cost a ton, but he'll keep the people coming and spending their money in the Battery. Instead, we'll maybe bring Adam Duvall back and punt SS to Arcia/Grissom as we release a report in January about how much money the team made in the last quarter.
 
What I think will keep us from trading for Reynolds (other than a handful of teams being able to top our package) would be what it means for the future of shortstop and catcher, assuming it would take either Contreras or Grissom or both to land him.

If we trade Grissom and don't sign Correa/Swanson, then it seems like it'll be a line of stopgaps unless someone lower down the prospect list springs up more quickly. Are we going to be willing to pay Tim Anderson a bunch of money next offseason? If we trade Contreras, are we confident TDA can continue to be productive through 2024? We'd basically have to pick up his option for that year because there doesn't appear to be much else coming available on the market and no one I know of ready to crack the big-league team as it stands.
 
We know what Reynolds will bring. That is his benefit. He is good and has a track of being better. WC is an unknown. He could be better than Reynolds. But he is unproven. It would be hard for me to do a one for one swap. I would want to. But not sure I could. Giving up a younger more controlled player is hard.

It does, but 3 things:

1. Contreras has nothing to do with LF and we already have much better defensive options at catcher. Reynolds would be a massive defensive upgrade over Ozuna or Rosario and wouldn't need a platoon partner. We would immediately have the best defensive OF in the majors by a wide margin.

2. Its a bit up in the air about how good both players are offensively. We know Contreras' HR/FB ratio from last year is not sustainable. Looks like he had a little bit of luck with a .370 wOBA compared to a .347 xwOBA (obviously still very solid). So its hard to say how much of his elite performance is real and how much is fluky. Reynolds had a bit of a down year compared with last year and his rookie year but let's not forget in 2021 he was a 6.1 fWAR player and had a .385 wOBA compared to a .386 xwOBA. So its hard to say if his "down" year last year is more fluky or real. However, he really turned in on in August in September so it seems like he kinda got back into his groove. Note, I'm still a bit worried about a little Nate McClouth vibe but if you actually go back and compare their stats, they are not close... Reynolds has been worlds better than McClouth ever was.

3. I would prefer not to include Contreras in any deal for Reynolds. I'd prefer Grissom to be a centerpiece with some of our young starters but I'm not sure if that would be enough. I would love for Contreras to be our full time DH, sometimes rotating in at catcher. But I still think I'd be open to trading Contreras while his value is sky high.

Zb. I get you man. Reynolds is a really solid player. It would be hard to pass up an offer for him even if it included Contreras. Problem is. If we grand WC. We have nothing at catcher and little D is going to regress.

Okay then, let's just go back to getting Murphy from OAK for a Grissom based package and throw a Contreras based package at Pitt for Reynolds haha. THEN our lineup would be unstoppable (signing Correa too obviously). Easy, right? Yes, I'm aware this won't happen, but I would be doing my best to find a way.
