Official official offseason thread

I agree with this.

In the past, it was clear when AA wouldn’t spend money bc he wanted to see what we had or wait until the trade deadline to reassess; but as of today, our team is virtually set up all across the board for this season and the future except for ss and lf. One could make an argument we’ll see what Ozuna and Rosario can do in lf before making a trade, but we legitimately have nothing worth a damn at ss on the big league roster or in the minors. No matter how much they want to spin Grissom looking good with Wash, he’s not a starting ss in the majors, much less for a top 5 payroll team who’s contending for a championship every single year.

To further compound the issue at ss, there is now a top ss available who is 28 years old and a long term contract would coincide with our window and length of contracts of everyone else on the team.

It would be an absolutely perfect singing, but I’ve seen this situation before. I have absolutely no confidence in us signing Correa. Instead, we will once again sit on our hands and do nothing except for a minor, redundant move of the players we already have on the roster. And if it plays out that we do nothing of consequence, then when, if ever, will we see AA shove his chips all in? If not now, there literally isn’t another time that is more perfect.

what do you mean we will once again sit on our hands?

AA signed Donaldson when it was clear Riley wasn’t ready.
He signed Ozuna in 2020 to replace Donaldson’s bat (Marcell almost won the triple crown in the abbreviated season)
Last year he proactively acquired Olson when he knew FF wasn’t gonna take the deal offered.
He also went after McHugh and Kenley.

Where does this notion AA sits on his hands and does nothing come from? He makes trades every trade deadline to help shore up the club.

he’s way way more active than JS, Wren, or Coppy ever were.

Not to mention all of the extensions he’s signed to the young guys to keep them cheap when they get expensive.

Dude has locked up Ronald, Ozzie, Harris, Olson, Strider, Riley for YEARS to come, and all he does is sit on his hands?!?!?!?

Signed one of the pitchers and then you have Grissom and Anderson + plus to work a deal.
Milwaukee trade Hader last year we never know if they want to trade Adames.

Also have to remember players like Morton and D'Arnaud were extended mid season. So that takes away the excitement for some who treat the off season as a time when things must happen.

you’d think AA has been running a 4th place team every year and hasn’t made the right call far more often than not.

Aa slander is awful. He’s won the division every year and a ws.

He’s missed. Every gm misses. Some were odd from the start, ozuna is its own thing.

I feel like every year he’s gone out and made a big move early. Not so this year. So maybe he is playing musical chairs with the ss to see who is left without a chair.

Correa is interesting bc there was reportedly mutual interest last year. The problem is his agent isn’t going to let him take less than turner. We would need Correa to want to be on our team and to find a way for boras to claim a win. Top aav, top total, something.

Sorry I misspoke. Rather, I wasn’t as clear as I should have been. I meant he sits on his hands with free agents. His big free agent signings were Donaldson and Ozuna, but he hasn’t pushed all in on a big name, young star. He’s played a relatively risk free free agency game, and whole that is usually the way to go, he has stayed away from any real impact, free agent signings.

I agree that Correa would be a perfect add to our team, but I don't see AA coming anywhere close to what he is going to want. AA prefers to the the higher AAV, short term deals which Correa is not looking to do this time around. There is still going to be plenty of interest around and teams that can sign him for the long term deal he wants. Giants, Dodgers, Cubs, etc.

I'm pretty sure it is Swanson or bust for us on the SS market.

If we have the money necessary to throw at Correa, we'd throw a lesser amount at Dansby and bring him back. The fact that we might not be able to afford Dansby shows we can't afford Correa.

Nobody has said we can’t afford Dansby. The overwhelming consensus is AA doesn’t want to pay Dansby what he’s commanding. AA is all about value and he has a $ amount he feels Dansby is worth. Once the asking price exceeds that, it sounds like AA is willing to walk away.

The Braves reportedly "checked in" on deGrom. But once the deal got past 2 or 3 years, AA was out. So surely, AA didn't assume he could get deGrom at an AAV of $22m.

If he feels the value is there i'm sure the has the go ahead to make that signing. Agreed, he doesn't see Swanson as a $25m AAV player. But would he be willing to go to $30m+ AAV over 6-7 years on Correa? I doubt it. He just doesn't do those kind of contracts.

With most of the positional guys locked up long term, AA May would rather use money for pitchers. Fried and Morton won't be around too long

If Turner got 11/300 and Xander got 11/280, and both are a few years older than Correa, my guess is 11/300 is the absolute least amount Correa takes. Maybe he goes 10/300 to get a higher AAV but my guess is he’ll want the years as well as the 30+ AAV.

My apologies, when I mentioned 6-7 years, that was again because AA doesn't like those long term deals, so it would be again assuming a lower year, higher AAV situation.

Being able to afford someone is more than just the ability to scrape up enough to pay their salary. It's also the ability to fit that commitment into the payroll. A $25 million commitment means less on a $350 million payroll than it does on a $250 million payroll.

If the calculus doesn't make sense for us for Dansby then it wont make sense for us for Correa. Correa almost certainly will get more years at a higher AAV than Dansby. If AA wont commit the payroll to Dansby, he wont do it for Correa.

I'm sure AA will keep an open mind if for some reason their market just dried up, but I don't expect we'll make serious offers to either Bae or Correa.

I expect Correa to end up in SF, and they won't have to give him 10+ years. I expect Swanson to be a Cub for a deal we will all be glad AA didn't sign.

Then I expect AA to bring in a SS that is negligibly better than Arcia would be full time, and 2023 will be full of arguments about which ~2 win SS should be playing based on who's hot or some small sample matchup splits nonsense ("Arcia is 4 for 9 against tomorrow's SP over the last 5 years, he should definitely be starting").

And after all that the Braves will still have a Top 5 payroll and be a Top 5 team...which I think folks lose sight of when disappointed about not signing the big fish FA.
