Official official offseason thread

If the goal was to sign a 5th OF to compliment Harris, this is as good a get as anyone available.

If this is the main upgrade to the OF then I'm afraid AA may not have understood the tax cap ramifications of signing all those extensions.

You may be right. First world problems.

Work a trade for Donaldson and free the money for next year.

Add a veteran pitcher for fifth spot ( Cueto, Kluber or Greinke ) keep Anderson, Soroka and Allard for trades now or during the trade deadline.

Bowman: The Braves love Luplow's defense. His arm strength is in the 96th percentile. His ability to play both corners would allow him to occasionally give Acuña a break in RF. But the plan is for Luplow to come to camp to fight for the LF job with Rosario. Chance the two could platoon.

If that's the case, that's terrible. I was hoping Luplow was just going to be a backup CF to spell Harris vs tough lefties.

Now I’m convinced we’re out of money. Not sure how or why with the recent World Series and the Battery as a cash cow, but here we are.

The Braves will be opening the season next year with their highest payroll by far. Not sure what you were expecting.

If Luplow was AA's, outfield move. That's a big L. Minor league deal, fine, but still plenty of options. I have no idea if we even make another signing (we should, obviously).

Not only is this completely underwhelming and doesn’t really achieve what we truly need, imagine how ****ty things will look if Acuña or Harris go down for an extended period. An outfield of Rosario, Luplow, Harris/Acuña, in this scenario, with Ozuna at dh is a train wreck.

This is a bench piece, y’all. Relax.

Y’all act like you’ve never followed AA before. He isn’t cheap, but he’s going stretch every dollar whatever he spends.

I can’t imagine he wouldn’t know. Would he? No way.

I dont think anyone was expecting Aaron Judge... But i mean, come on. There's Profar, Pollock, Duvall, Conforto, Drury, Myers, Peralta all who can play some OF. Yes, they'd cost some money but what are doing here if they wont spend? The current outfield basically hinges on Acuna and Harris to stay healthy all year if this is the move. Find it hard to think it's not, but if it is, oof.

Career vs lhp...
.847 ops
.355 wOBA
125 wrc+

Conforto vs rhp...
.873 ops
.369 wOBa
136 wrc+

Just like luplow, conforto sucks vs his weak side...
Conforto career vs lhp...
.695 ops
.306 wOBA
94 wrc+

Assuming Rosario can return to his career numbers vs rhp (.794 ops, 108 wrc+), this platoon could be pretty good with the bat.

ETA... I don't know if this is even the plan, but it does seem like it at least has the possibility to be pretty solid offensively.

It’s either that or the plan all along was to add essentially nothing via FA. I’ve said it was possible since the offseason began, and while I don’t think it’s likely, it’s possible considering this organization has never had to plan around the tax threshold at any point in its history.

Assuming Rosario and Ozuna get the bulk of the LF and DH PAs and a 13/13 pitcher/position player split, the bench is shaping up to be Arcia/Adrianza (Grissom will not be on the bench), Ludlow, TDA and someone else like Hilliard.

There is still room to sign Conforto and force Rosario/Ozuna to the bench. I fully expect AA to make that happen.

So we have Ozuna, Rosario, Hilliard and Luplow for basically LF and DH. You want to add a extra outfielder? Murphy and D’Arnaud probably need some DH time too.

Bench will be TDA/Ozuna, Luplow/Rosario, Arcia, and either Adrianza or Hilliard for the last spot. Roster should now be fully set. At least half a dozen better, should have been affordable, options left on the table.

We aren’t signing Conforto or anyone else worth half a damn.

Even if we don't...

Acuna 5.1 fWAR (projected)
Harris 4.3
Riley 4.5
Ozzie 3.2
Olson 3.6
Murphy 4.0/TDA 1.3
Arcia 1.3/Grissom 2.5
Ozuna even projected positive, 1.1

Just gotta hope the lf platoon can hit, and both their career platoon advantage stats say they will.

Last spot can/will/should be 10000 percent upgraded. Not expecting Conforto, but dont think this was the final move.
