Official official offseason thread

I think both Swanson and FF wanted to come back but FF wasn’t taking as much of a discount. AA was just being nice instead of saying he didn’t see Swanson repeating this season. Most people Know that Dansby won’t repeat 2022.

I agree with that.
It does kind of suck to know that any player we grow attached to will not be Brave when the value of thier deal lessens to the Braves.
So we won’t ever have another Chipper or even Smoltz.
Gonna be hard for me to say goodbye to Ronnie and Ozzie in a few years.
That is unless they have new ownership by then.

I just studied up on Grissom….. hell, I think we are aren’t gonna miss Dansby at SS too much at all. He outta hit about 280 - maybe more - and hit 20 with probably 25 + SBs and a decent walk rate. Working with Wash down in New Orleans for three weeks on defense.
I’ll take that all day.

The Dodgers haven’t done squat this offseason. I bet FF is like wow

JD and Thor are good signings, but lost both Turners, Belly, Kahnle, Anderson, Buehler is out most of the year with TJ, Heaney. We havent done much either but basically only have lost Dansby, Contreras from the ML roster, and Jansen but our pen is DEEP.

Paying 19 of the 24 mill he’s owed. Wow

sometimes the roster spot is more valuable than the money......see Ozuna.

The Grissom thing I keep going back and forth on.

It seemed clear that most neutral observers thought he was not a MLB SS. He had some issues for us last year. His arm strength did not measure well. He's playing next to Riley. No shifting.

On the other hand we have done a good job scouting our own guys. I may be wrong, but his ability to play SS seems like something that is easier to project than other things. We have Ron Washington. And I'm also remembering Dansby's early struggles on defense and Ron helping him through those. Dansby did not have the blessings we saw with Simba in Arm talent and creativity.

I thought AA's interview with Schultz was classy. He went out of his way to let people know Dansby wanted to be here and we decided we were not going to pay that much for him. And I agree with him. FF didn't do the reasonable home town discount. Dansby would have, but 100 vs 170 is not a reasonable discount.

Signing Jansen to 2 years makes zero sense IMO.....With the rule changes this season regarding throwing over and the larger bases, a walk or single are automatically a double with him on the mound.

We got 41 saves from him last season, but it feels like he blew 10....(i know he didn't but it feels like it)

I think we could still add a pen arm between now and spring training. AA was adamant in an interview recently that the Braves only have $1.4m in guaranteed contracts signed this offseason. Anderson was signed on a non-guaranteed contract. So if Kimbrel or Chapman are willing to take a skinny deal to play for a contender, that is the type of arm AA usually goes for. Prior closing experience to be used as set up.

I agree it's going to be hard to get a reading on Grissom's defense. He didn't look that sharp at second base, but I think it's important to remember that he was basically learning second base at the major league level in the middle of a pennant race. His footwork and angles on pop-ups looked a little off. Getting back to the other side of the second base where he's more familiar with things might clean up some of those perceived shortcomings.

That said, the book on him (at least the reports I've seen) has consistently said he probably can't stick at SS. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Same goes for his offense. It's all going to boil down to adjustments and whether he can make them. Second time through the league, he seemed to tail off. Could be a lot of reasons for that.

Basically, I think his floor is fairly decent, but I don't think his ceiling is particularly high. But given what he's surrounded with on the Braves, that will play.
