Video Game Thread: Atari vs. Commodore Debate...

One nice thing about being a first time Playstation owner. Is that I can play kind of old games that were raved about while waiting for new games to come out and don't have to slug through old games. So i've been playing Horizon Zero Dawn. It's pretty fun. It's tough but not as punishing as Soulsborne games.

Speaking of PlayStation and soulsborne… two must plays for a first time PS owner

Bloodborne (takes a few minutes to get used to the bad frame rate but it’s arguably FromSoftware’s crowning achievement)
Demon’s Souls: if you have a PS5, the remake is still the most impressive next gen experience

Haven't played it yet, gonna wait to see if it's a black friday deal. Same with Horizon Zero West.
Horizon for sure is getting deals. I liked that. It’s got a lot of bloat, but the core combat loop is at least fun.

I think Ragnarok stays at $70 (that new price point still feels insane.)

I mean I remember paying 50 bucks for Mario 64 25 years ago. As long as we get a complete game I don't care about paying 70 or 80 bucks. I demand long game play. I would have paid 70 bucks for Elden Ring.

Totally… with inflation and the general enormous scope of AAA games, $70 is arguably too low.

ANd i mean it largely has been. Most AAA games come with DLC to fully fill it and tha tgoes to the 80 cut or so. It's been kind of normal. What's buckwild to me are games like Destiny which can cost 150+. Which isn't worth it. Destiny sucks. It's a gear grind game.

But yeah I'll pay 80 bucks for BReath of the Wild 2. if it's as good as Breath of the Wild 1.

I played a fair amount of vanilla Destiny 2 at launch. I can see how people get sucked into the whole loot shooter thing, but there are so many unique, awesome experiences that I don’t understand why so many people choose to play the same game for 6+ years.

As a WOW player I feel attacked

Diablo 4 keeps pumping out great cinematics. Hope the game is half as good.

I have 0 faith in Blizzard. THey went from an elite dev who would pump out amazing AAA to a joke company in like 5 years.

THat being said, I've been buzzing for the last 20 hours cause of Hades 2. Also excited for Judas. And getting an announcement for the full release of BG3, I"ve enjoyed Early Access, but I'm ready for more story. I've explroed like 90% of the early access content already and found silly ways around certain things in the game.

I mean your not wrong to have 0 faith in them. It's why I'm waiting a bit before dipping my toes into the newest WOW expansion. I'll probably get Diablo when it launches though.

Diablo 4 early buzz is really promising. I think those guys are gonna deliver with that one.

I mean if it doesn't go ape, and the microsoft purchase doesn't go through, Blizzard is in big trouble. THey'll survive because Activision makes all the money off CoD. And WoW is a cash cow. But their other properties are losing brand value like crazy. OW2 is panned by most of it's fan base, The botched launch (really botched advertisement) of Diablo Immortal.

Except the very rare game I don't get games at launch any more.

I had a whole ass millennial moment with a kid I work with, when I was explaining how dope preorders used to be. YOu used to get ****. And back in the day if you didn't preorder you would struggle to find the game in store for months unless you hung outside for midnight releases.

Now I can just buy it online and it shows up on my console in an hour or so. There's no scarcity and aside from probably playing a buggy game there's no real benefit to not waiting some time for the release. Like the games I've bought within say 2 months of launch in the last 5 years I can count on 1 hand.

Baldur's Gate 3 early access - I'll admit a massive gambit, but Larian is a beast of a studio.
Elden Ring - I have always like Soulsborne games, even though I'm the worst at them usually. Elden Ring managed to ratcheted down difficulty enough, that I could push through the game. I'm kind of dying to go back into the game and play it agian from low levels.
Metroid Dread - ONe of the games I looked forward to the most. Also Nintendo First party games are virtual slam dunks. Notice I said first party games, Pokemon doesn't count.
Mario Galaxy
Smash Ultimate

Basically FIrst party Nintendo games, and a few others here and there. I don't count Hades as that was out on PC for some time before I got it at launch on the switch.

Huge direct, GBA and Game Boy online,

AW 1+2 has a new release date (**** you putin)

Metroid Prime remake out now (will wait to see if a steel book edition comes out)

But the big boy is new Zelda trailer. Matt Mercer as ganon, which means probably heavier VO work. Boy it looks fun. Cannot wait to spend 200+ more hours in Hyrule.

Look forward to dusting off the Switch for the first time since Metroid Dread for the new Zelda.

(I’ll probably impulse buy Metroid Prime too)
