Spring Training Thread

There has to be something else going on behind the scenes. Grissom hasn't been that bad defensively and has been fine offensively. Not to mention he has a much better track record than Shewmake... just seems weird

Grissom is better deployed as a super util. He can still play short twice a week.

I agree with this, but we don’t have a manager capable of properly implementing it.

If Shewmake somehow is ready to be our SS, you get Grissom used to playing all over — including some some corner outfield — and he becomes our super utility guy for the next couple years who can play everywhere but center field and catch.

That all just seems unlikely to happen for a lot of reasons.

Not if Shewmake plays like he has his entire professional career up until 27 spring training at bats

Grissom is not going away. If Shewmake fades he would be ready to come up quickly.

That said, it does seem a curious development.

Could just be a way to get Grissom a few weeks in the minors, and give Shewmake a quick tryout in real games.

Obviously he's not going away... I was just replying to the comment that he's better as a super utility guy and I think that's a silly statement given Shewmake's body of work (or lack there of)

I almost wonder if they're showcasing Shewmake for a trade. Showing off the fact he can play SS.

But that wouldn't explain the lack of reps for Grissom at SS when he needs them. We definitely don't know everything here.

I’m sure Grissom is getting plenty of reps in non game situations to work on footwork and release.

Defense is going to be more value able than ever now with decreased shifting. If there is a significant difference right now between the two then I could understand the direction. Development is rarely linear and maybe braves loved what they saw from shew over the winter and now in ST.

If Grissom isn't the everyday SS, he's likely going to be in Gwinnett especially if they see him as a future super-utility guy. He's played 2B in the bigs and SS and 3B in the minors, but I can remember when he was drafted the impression was he was going to grow off of SS. He's a big guy and probably not done filling out. If they see him as a possible LF, my guess is they are reluctant to have him learn the position at the big-league level.

He did okay at 2B last season, but it was easy to see that he was lacking polish, especially with his footwork. He was rushed and did well considering that, but I didn't see him as a finished product. If he goes to Gwinnett, I'd also give him some time at 1B. We currently have no one behind Olson if he were to go down.

Shewmake starting at ss today hitting 2nd. He's definitely the favorite imo

Grissom hasn’t played SS since Tuesday. I don’t want to say the battle is over or anything, but that’s not exactly how I would expect them to handle their starting SS who needs more defensive reps.

I have remained higher than most on Shewmake since he was drafted. I know he's had his struggles, but the tools are there.

Just like I've always been higher than most on Justin Dean. I think the larger bases will get him a promotion to Atl pretty quickly this year and will make him extremely valuable as a reserve OFer.

We get it. You hate Shewmake just like you hate Anderson.

Not sure why we would trade a prospect that is very close to contributing in a position of need. I am wondering if they are playing with the idea of Ozzie/Grissom DHing some. But ultimately I agree with 50. If Shew wins job then Griss needs to be down in AAA playing all over the field.
