GDT 4/16/2023: Braves @ Royals - Playing our Tromp Card

Showing that his plate discipline has deteriorated is not “dissecting him to death”. I hope someone on the Braves is alerting him to things he needs to improve upon so he can continue to be a star.
I've even alluded to that but I'll just disagree about the dissect part. It is what we do good or bad I guess. Anywho, I'm in no way saying he's arrived again...but he looks better for whatever reason.

It strongly depends on the assessment of TDA. If the Braves would like to minimize his time behind the plate then some type of move would need to be made. Arcia likely reclaims his SS position upon his return. Grissom would likely be the LF/UTIL. In that scenario Tromp needs to remain on the roster as the backup C. That leaves 3 spots for Rosario Hilliard Pilliar and Ozuna. I could see us moving Rosario but not just to keep Ozuna on the roster. There's just nowhere to play him.

Thinking on it again the Braves could elect to use TDA as the 2nd C and just significantly reduce his behind the plate work load. So that could be a way to keep Ozuna on the roster. Either way these aren't roster decisions that we'll be facing anytime soon. Arcia's out another month at a minimum and there's no timetable for TDA's return. This will likely be a problem that ends up working itself out naturally.

Ozuna is no doubt the odd man out but will they get rid of him owing him so much money is the question. I don’t remember the Braves ever eating money like that.

But you do recall the Braves using prospects to lower our financial burdens from a trade.

What makes eating the money easier is that we will not have to immediately spend money to replace him. We can use internal options for now and still be miles better than keeping him. Basically we pay the money to him and clog a roster spot or we pay the money to him and let him clog someone else's roster spot.

Corporate ownership almost negates the opportunity to DFA Ozuna with over $30M still owed. Now, if all the share holders would agree to forfeit dividends maybe it could happen.
Just another aside but has anyone considered that TDA may have to take medical retirement? That would even further diminish the possibility of DFA Ozuna.

The shareholders with enough stock to matter almost certainly understand the concept of a sunk cost.

There is far more to gain (the revenue from a deep playoff run\WS) vs the sunk cost.

We will have that regardless of Nozuna.. I want him gone and will continue to beat that drum, but the FO knows they can keep running him out there in hopes he shows some signs of performance.

There really wasn't any reason not to give him a month or so to see if he could rebound.

He didn't. It has been nearly three years since Ozuna was a productive MLB player. As soon as a roster spot is needed he needs to be DFA'd, regardless of the money committed to him.

There's too many good players that need a roster spot for Ozuna to just be wasted on the bench doing nothing. If/when we get near full strength, he's gotta be DFA'd.

What good players?

Maybe not even good, but what does Ozuna even do? Cant PR him, cant play defense, he's basically a DH. Someone like Tromp allow TDA to have Murph and TDA in the lineup. Guys like Hilliard/Pillar allow Acuna to DH while having a day off in the field. MH as well. Along with our glut of pitching options.

I think they should play ozuna every day until he hits 100 PA to be sure. Babip is .040. His exit velocity (90.2) is at highest level since 2020. His hard hit % is 48.1 (career 45.0%). His barrel % is 14.8 (career 9.7).

Very good things ….
Ronald Acuna Jr. Yeah. Him. (He did make a base running error. Hopefully he grows out of that in time, but he also stole third.)

Good things:

…. Lineup is scoring a lot. Every night.
Ozzie looks like he’s ‘bout to streak, Grissom is impressing with his bat and his D looked a little better tonight.
Olson is amazing at first digging out some very difficult throws. Oh, and he hit a triple that coulda’ been inside the parker… assuming they leave it as a triple and not a single with 2 base error.
Minter Ecking !
Nick Anderson !

These guys are lethal. Our BP is just so good - yeah, I know Tonkin gave up a lead.

Kyle Wright looked like a whole new dude today.

When our pitching coach visits the mound, our pitching actually improves - dramatically and immediately.

Double Sweeps !!

Max and Mike back - as someone said above,
We have amassed the best record in the NL without these two.
We are about to get a whole lot better……

Mets are at Dodgers - we need to take care of some SD business.

“There’s a few all stars in there”

Really? To me, he looked like a guy who's having issues that will lead towards major surgery eventually. His fastball velo is way down, and it also appeared to me like he's dropping his arm angle, maybe to reduce discomfort.
We really need Soroka back close to his former effectiveness.

Meh. His shoulder concerns me too but this seems like a reach. His fastball velocity indeed was down but everything was within a single mph or two and his CU was actually up. Given his shortened Spring Training and that he didn't begin throwing for a few weeks, I'd give him another two or three starts before we make any decisions. His pitch movement was erratic but fairly encouraging from his first start to his second.

He "looks better" because he's hammered a few pitches in the zone over the last few games. As always, some meaningless sample size doesn't mean anything, but leads folks to believe something is now different.

When Albies shows improved O-Swing% over a ~50 PA sample there will be evidence of improvements he has made.

Agreed. Wright with shoulder issues already seems like a guy on the wrong side of the decline curve. This is not the FA velocity chart you want to see out of a 27 year old pitcher:

https://www.fangraphs.com/players/k...3&rtype=mult&gt1=15&dStatArray=FA&ymin=&ymax=

All we can do now is hope he recovers and continues to contribute.

Side note....Wright is older than I realized, and it's very possible to bullets are running dry.

Yikes. Feels like we be referring to this chart a lot throughout the summer.
