Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Not that much. I think the issue is the closer market is always sketchy. Teams aren't always willing to spend **** tons of money on closers all the time.

I think when you look at FA, usually people wait for the biggest chips to fall into place before the middle of th etop 10 signs.

The only top FAs who've signed before Shohei's announcement were Nola and Gray. Yamamoto, Snell, BEllinger, Montgomery, etc. were all hanging out. Because everyone is waiting for Shohei and Yamamoto to set the market.

Hader also has a QO attached to him. Giving up a 2nd/5th plus 1M in international money. Meh.

While the Dodgers getting Ohtani was pretty much a forgone conclusion for a couple years now, that $700M guarantee is shocking. The Dodgers didn’t protect themselves b any way against him never being an effective pitcher again. Crazy money.

MLB needs a salary cap and a salary floor. Teams shouldn't be out there with $70 million payrolls and teams shouldn't be dropping $70 million on a single player.

For sure. Or there's a luxury tax and a penalty floor. Payroll under X amount, pay a fine to the league, payroll over x amount pay a fine to the league. FIne is 2x the amount you're over or under.

I'm fine with Shohei getting paid, the issue is when teams have multiple of the highest paid players in baseball. Yankees are a great example of that with Cole, Judge and Soto. Assuming Soto gets around or over 30M in arb, they'll have 4 players making over 30M, 5 making over 25M.

$700 million sounds nuts, but guys like Musk and Bezos are worth hundreds of billions.

Ohtani's number will look like peanuts in 20 years.

I wouldn't count the Dodgers out on Yamamoto, either. They'll have the entire nation of Japan watching their games.

But it’s not 20 years from now and the contract doesn’t extend 20 years from now, so that argument is dumb

700 million for 1 baseball player is dumb any way you put it. You’re getting a good hitter and hoping he can pitch. All the risk lies with the Dodgers here. And again theres nothing about this contract that will age well.

I've always thought Cease to the Dodgers makes the most sense when looking at the deeper prospect pool the Dodgers have over just about everybody.

White Sox asking price is pretty crazy. I could see Friedman doing something like Burnes and Adames for a big package. Even though both would be on 1 year deals.

We got a younger LF! Why not go ahead and trade Ozuna and get someone younger? Time to start looking at the future.

Ozuna just hit 40 HR's, and had a 900 OPS. Makes only 16M, he's on a good contract, teammates like him. A future DH move is probably for next offseason.

I have a feeling that we finish trading for Shane Bieber! Why? Because he is ok to work a extension. Burnes and Cease both are looking for high contracts. Maybe Tyler Glasnow if he is looking for a extension.

It'll be someone no ones been talking about. That's how AA works.

AA is not trading for someone with shoulder and elbow problems. Your takes man…
