The baseline 10% is what I've wanted from the beginning.
I thought you wanted border patrol agents from the beginning. No wait, you wanted fetanyl stopped from Canada. No wait, you wanted to replace the income tax with tarrif revenue. No wait, you wanted this to be a negotiation tactic to get people to come to the table. No wait, this was always about China. We want free trade with everyone and want the world to turn on China. No wait, baseline 10% is what you wanted from the beginning

One weird thing about the pro-tariff messaging has been this implicit assumption that people buy cheap shit from China because they want to, and not because they have to. Anybody claiming they’ll be happy to pay more for goods made in America is seeming to miss that the people most affected by this just won’t be able to buy those things at all now. The inferior quality isn’t a selling point, it’s something people just have to put up with because they can’t afford the alternative.
Everything about the pro-tariff messaging is weird. And dead wrong.

this is a master negotiator.

put 145% on them. They don't blink. they don't take a call. umm, ok lets make it 80% then? that sounds good.

can't wait to hear what we got for that concession!
“Seems right”

He’s really got it dialed in!

How people continue to give this buffoon the benefit of the doubt on this issue is baffling.

A lot of optimism of quick progress towards a trade deal with China.

My expectation for tomorrow is US will announce China will crackdown on fentanyl and in return US will immediately drop the 20% fentanyl tariff. I suspect we’ll also see a broad outline of promises from China to buy American goods (agriculture, LNG, Boeing, etc.) in return US will drop tariffs to the Liberation Day rate (less the fentanyl tax).

I expect this will deescalate the situation enough so both sides can start full trade discussions that will likely take the entire Trump term to finalize.
