FG : Ozzie Albies

As much as he's regressed it's a possibility but if I were betting I'd say they'll give him one more year to prove it's not the wrist lingering and with a 4 million buyout it would only cost 3 more million to retain him so I think it's a no brainer he's at 2nd next year. With SS and other holes on the team they don't wanna create another one in the same offseason.

Not sure what the buyout situation was, but they did decline d'Arnaud's $8M option after having a significantly better season than Albies is having now.

Travis Demeritte is toiling in an independent league, so he is available.

Seriously, I don't see Anthopoulos deviating from his "core" plan that involved all the extensions. Further, Albies' contract is a bargain and although he's really playing poorly, I don't see how they replace him at the same rate of pay.

I was just about to post a link to this article. I've looked through his metrics too, and the only conclusion I can draw is he's still plagued by that wrist being weak/hurt.

Either way, there is 0% chance Albies isn't on the roster in 2026 to save $3M, and the sheer number of other holes on the roster means taking a gamble on him bouncing back is a reasonable strategy.

The author himself acknowledges that the question is clickbait and they're obviously going to pick up the option -- even if Albies just ends up being a 1.1 or 1.2 WAR guy this year, you don't mind paying a few million bucks for that, and that's without even getting into the other stuff.

I choose to believe it is the wrist injury that has resulted in Ozzie's poor performance this season. If you look deeper into his stats, it's really just the power outage that stands out. K rates are normal. BB rate is actually at a career high. Contact rates are normal, so he isn't having trouble catching up to the ball. It's simply the power that has disappeared, which isn't uncommon following wrist injuries. And obviously is appears to be affecting his right side significantly more as the numbers as a lefty are actually getting within shouting distance of his career line.

Also, if you look at his 2022 Savant page, it is very, very similar to his 2025 Savant page within the same range of PAs. And he had the exact same EV in 2022 as well.

I joke around, but I’m with you. It would be idiotic to not pick up his option just to save 3 million. I believe he’ll rebound next year.

Like a few other guys on the team they are all pressing right now. Give them a week to relax and take off and hopefully that helps. The all star break is much needed for this team bc Ozuna isn't this bad either.

Whole team comes roaring back to make the playoffs despite all the injuries then promptly shit the bed in the first round.

8M for a backup catcher is alot of money when you have a prospect coming along.

Albies is our starting 2B. OZzie is either getting 7M to play baseball for us or 4M to not play baseball for us. If Ozzie is a 1.5-2 WAR player he's more than worth 7M.

ANd we have no one coming through to replace him. Unless you think Nacho can do it. Don't know if I'd bet on that.

Now that our season is over Ozzie seems to have gotten his head out of his ass and started hitting,. Thats nice and all but we need to shake up the roster and that means we have to trade something of value. If Ozzie has a great second half good for us. Harris is 24 and should have his 2000th at bat this season. A lot of players are still prospects at his age. And we have him until 2032 for cheap if we want him. Murphy we have for 3 more years. Ozzie we only have for 2 and I dont really want to re-sign him. So that makes him the odd man out imo. I dont know what we could get for him but I would look at Steven Kwan of the Indians. Plus defender in LF and a great avg/obp hitter vs RH pitching but below average power. He has 3 years of service time left but Ozzie has more upside with his power. Indians were rumored to be shopping Kwan. They do have a highly drafted 2B prospect but they need offense everywhere. They could fit both in if they want to. Maybe we could even pawn Profar off on them if we eat some salary. Their offense as a whole sucked pretty bad so he would still be an upgrade offensively over what they have i the OF minus Kwan. Both Kwan and Profar are basically LF and DH only so it would be hard to keep both on the roster. Money wise its basically a wash. Kwan should earn a little more than Ozzie makes in 2026. We have plenty of power hitters what we need are table setters to hit in front of Acuna/Olson/Riley. I still like Nacho's bat so hopefully he could play atleast average defense and put up a solid OBP playing at 2B. Given our struggles we should be targeting Willi Castro this offseason. Switch hitter, plays all over, plays good enough defense and puts up a .330+ OBP. He could be a backup option if Nacho doesnt work out at 2B. I dont know if we can or will even try to sign Bichette adding him and Kwan is what we need to fix the offense. Perfect world scenario we could bring in Willi Castro and Harrison Bader as well. Thats probably 50 million a year commitment bringing in all those players although Castro/Bader should be short term contracts. I think we could do that and still bring in a 20+ million a year SP.
