REAL FOOTBALL Thread

Falcons DC apparently left his iPad unlocked and his son got Shedur Sanders phone number off it and prank called him on draft day. It's embarrassing for the Falcons but the bigger issue is data security. If this can happen then it's not unreasonable to think someone could get access to a team iPad and leak the playbook online or something.
you'd think it would be safe from his own family

its a harmless prank and people are talking like this kid should be jailed...

Agreed. Other prospects were prank called too.

If they wanted to stop this, they should issue brand new phones to the top 100-150 prospects in the class and only issue out the phone numbers to each team the day before the draft.

THey do give them brand new phones.

But they can simplify this even more by not caring. Or like you said don't send them out except to GMs the day before draft day.

We're about to find out if thethe's boy is really legit. Purdy got paid.

Back end of top 10 in an escalating cap world.

In a couple of years he will be firmly outside top 10 in terms of comp.

Great deal for both sides. Purdy is a stud. Still a solid year last year despite the year from hell.

I'm not saying he is overpaid or anything like that, it's a deal that's in line with value for sure. But he was so underpaid they could over pay other positions. Now they can't. As is evident by them getting rid of Deebo and Hargrave and so on. Seems like they're going to rebuild around Purdy and that's fine if he's legit. To be fair I think that's the right strategy.

Personally I think deebo and Hargrove were deadweight. I said so at start of last year with deebo.

Need to build an offensive line but I think Niners are being underrated right now.

Still have weapons all over on the offensive side of ball assuming Cmac is healthy.

I have a sinking feeling about the Falcons situation. I'm afraid Penix will be excellent but even so won't be able to fully overcome the limitations of an incompetent coaching staff. I'm afraid Penix will be good enough to get the Falcons into the wild card round consistently which will keep Morris and co firmly in their jobs and continuing to hold the franchise back.

This is what happens when your organization has always been poorly run.

Sadly I think you could be right. Falcons seem to be climbing to mediocrity. But at some point they'll have to pay Penix, BIjan, and London, and then shit will start falling apart.

What makes me nervous is this is the last year of McGary's contract and I don't think we'll be in a position to get a good RT in the draft.

Penix, Bijan, and London could be a formidable trio. Also worried about the long term OL situation. I am more optimistic about the defense though. It may take some growing pains but I like what they did in the draft and I think there’s some really awesome defensive talent in place… but young. We will see!

Mediocrity is lethal in the NFL. It keeps bad coaches and GMs and costs you elite draft position. It has a way of sustaining itself too. Unable to achieve more, too much talent to achieve less.

Keeping Fontenot after firing AS was inexcusable. Dude isn't a GM. That led to hiring Morris, a multi time failed head coach but a personal friend of Blank. He was the only option that could prevent Blank from hiring Belicheck. Belicheck would have eventually demanded full control and made Fontenot and McKay vestigial. Fontenot and McKay pushed Morris hard as Morris was desperate to get another chance and would gladly play ball.

This is the insanity that is the Falcons management. Mediocrity is the limit as long as Blank and McKay are in control.

Getting a young edge who IMO should have been off the board (why the Bengals took Shemar over him is wild) and we got an impact player who can be a pass rusher, off ball linebacker, or an inside LB. I think Walker falling to us is the Diet version of Carter falling to the Eagles. So many teams passed on Walker who could have used an impact defensive player. Only reason I say Diet was carter was clearly a top 3 prospect While Walker was top 5 ish

And I think the later picks were strong value picks. Watts and Bowman were good picks. Whether they work out or not who knows but they were good picks for their spot.

I mean we need a weird OL hit. I'm not worried about our Interior, but our OT is rough. Matthews is still a great tackle but getting up tere in age, McGary never took a step forward. We need something weird like Killian Zierer to be the next Jordan Mailota. FOr a foreign born player who was late to the Football game to come in and learn the position and use physical prowess to dominate. Or for our 7th round tackle we took this year (he is from WIsconsin, one of the best OL schools in the nation) to hit way above his weight.

Sadly I don't think the Falcons will suck enough soon to get high enough in the draft to get a Joe Alt type of impact OT. Most impact OTs go top 10. A few sneak out but generally they're top 10 picks.

I mean you're not wrong about mediocrity being brutal. We spent most of the 2000s in that boat.

I agree, TF should have been canned. He made too many draft blunders. BLank seems like the kind of guy who gives his executives too much rope to hang themselves. Look at how long RIch McKay had as a GM, much less how long he's had as team president.

That being said, I'm glad we didn't hire Belichick, all the extra BS drama from his escort girlfriend isn't shit I want here.

Sadly I think most of our mistakes fall back to firing QUinn and DImitroff. Dimitroff for all his warts was able to get good teams out there consistently and aside from edge rushers, was able to hit on most of his first round picks. He drafted 2 Hall of Famers (well Ryan will be stupidly held out because of not winning a ring but he's as close to a hall of famer without being one that there is) for a Franchise who doesn't have many of them. Infact, we only have 1 guy who is in the Falcons ring of honor and the Hall of Fame who played most of his career here, Humphrey. Prime technically played more with the Falcons than any other team so we can lay claim to him but he had as many seasons in Dallas, his DPOY was in SF. Prime is a classic he played for a lot of teams and was great for most of them. And Dimitroff also drafted Ring of Honor contenders like Matthews and Grady Jarrett. He was much better than any other GM we ever had. Not perfect but much better. So far he got much more from only 4 top 10 picks (Ryan, Julio, Matthews and Beasley) than TF has gotten from 4. Infact DImitroff's first pick hit so hard it took a long time until we earned a top 10 pick.

I really odn't like DFontenot but I agree I think the division is so bad and our individual talent is good enough for him to keep his to

I didn't want Belicheck either. I thought there were younger, better options out there. But front office politics left us with a guy who is miles worse than even an ancient Belicheck. A guy who has already been a failure as a head coach twice. It's why we'll never be a consistent contender until they clean out the entire front office, McKay included.

So many of our problems have been caused by Rich McKay. When TD was GM, McKay was sequestered away from football operations and the team thrived. But once the competitive window closed and a rebuild was needed, McKay swooped back in and started pulling football operations strings again. TD got stupidly jettisoned and we got saddled with an incompetent Fontenot.

McKay is one of the best in the game on the business side of things but he shouldn't have any voice in football operations. However, he can't help but meddle on that side. It's why he needs to go. He can't be trusted to just stick to th business.

I think McKay is off football operations again. Which IMO is a bad sign for TF. I suspect McKay really was involved with bringing in Arthur Smith which was a catastrophe.

McKay has his fingerprints on a lot of the most disastrous decisions the Falcons have made in recent years. I have no doubt he campaigned against TD and pushed for TF who would be in McKay's camp. The Falcons had zeroed in on AS before hiring TF so you know McKay had his hands on that.

Then there's the fiasco of hiring one of the worst head coaches alive according to W-L record. That was McKay and TF teaming up to save their own power and have a loyal minion of a head coach.

The Falcons need to wipe the board. Fire McKay, TF, Morris, basically the entire front office and coaching staff. Start from scratch.
