This random guy did it for me. I won’t justify or downplay the response from the idiots who said violence is the answer. They’re dumb and wrong.
But while this response above is called out for being about a different, similar question about political violence, he makes a very good point that asking people across the political spectrum this question directly after Kirk’s assassination is likely skewing the data. No more excusable for people to answer yes, but I do think there’s some statistical relevance here.
What I think we might have is a political minority problem. Things like violence are more often tolerated by those with less trust in the government to protect their rights. This should also be examined and remedied by leaders on the left, particularly in light of recent events, but that discrepancy might not be so much a liberal problem as it is a state of politics right this moment problem. Would be curious to see how much of Europe is feeling right now.

Yes, it is. I’ve spoken at length about the echo chambers people are in. What I think is driving a lot of the difference in this metric at this moment in time is that the “Nazis, fascists and racists” on the right are winning and the “Nazis, Marxists and DEI” on the left is losing at the ballot box. The problematic rhetoric is driving the extremism and the polarization. I think the acceptance of political violence within this exact snapshot in time is potentially more noise than some are willing to accept. It doesn’t change the problem, but it might influence the solutions needed.
I’d also like to once again shill for the fact that I think there’s a similar gap in attitude toward institutional violence that skews hard to the right. If you’d have our military or police commit that violence or subject groups of people to death or destruction, I think that’s just as pervasive as attitudes toward political violence, and I think that’s where the rhetoric of the right is leading people.
Worth noting that the people libs actually voted for, DA Bragg, is the one pushing Murder One for terrorism. The judge lowering the charge was appointed 23 years ago by a Republican.
Also, his reasoning… kind of makes sense? I think we overcomplicate the way in which we do murder charges in most of the country, but I can’t say I disagree with what that judge wrote.
It's the NY justice system so you have to expect it.. It wouldn't surprise me with the right jury he could walk altogether.
