Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

Also, these late night comedy shows are terrible and ratings are declining like crazy. I think its probably that they are using this as an excuse to can someone to get them out of a financial hole

But ABC should have disciplined Kimmel for those comments. There needs to be SOME sort of accountability for blatantly lying in a healthy society
Was he lying about the fundraising or are you talking about some past lies?

dude i hate fox news and you keep bringing them up as if anyone thinks they are legitimate.

they are a joke and constantly peddle the agenda of Trump.

Have I not been critical enough of trump to satisfy yall?
I'm just pointing out that a network can do whatever they want. And most just let people sue them. Because tehy can often win.

Fox was a cited bycause they literally lie over and over again on the air and they don't have any admonishments or anything.

They do and thats why their median age viewer is 70 and getting older

Msnbc and cnn lies daily and thats why their audiences are declining because they are dying and nobody under the age of 50 cares what they say anymore

Everyone lies. And a healthy society would punish them in some way. We dont.

But maybe we will start

Kinda like pushing the story of Pelosi's gay lover or amplifying the claim that Walz ordered the hit job of a member of his own party.
Well I know youre an academic so might be hard to follow but

1. Sturg33 is not a journalist. He's a rando on a message board

2. Sturg33 never suggested Walz ordered the murder of a congressman

3. Paul should stop hanging out with gay drug addicts to avoid speculation that the addict snapped while they were enjoying their cocktail

Kimmel should be allowed to say whatever he wants for the most part.

But I think Nexstar used this to get in the good graces of the FCC for a potential merger and your likely right about ABC/Disney using this is a way to cut bait on Kimmel and late night in general.

The decline of cable TV and late night allienating half of it's former audience has caused it's ratings to tank. Kimmel would of been out of a job soon enough anyways.

They dont do jokes anymore. They just do blue sky rants of political activism. Who wants to watch that outside of wine cat ladies?

My favorite hits of the Pelosi event

1. The attacker was an illegal. But yall dont wanna touch that

2. There was no security at the home of the 3rd most powerful human on the planet who are essentially billionaires

3. The attacker waited til the cops got there to start assaulting. I suppose he wanted Paul to finish his cocktail?

4. Anything the news reports about the speaker of the house is honest and legitimate

Having said all that.. im sad Paul got assaulted and endorse the Trump strategy of getting rid of all illegals so he would never face that again. I also recommend billionaire powerful politicians to get a security system. I pay $40 a month for mine.

Im more sad about Kirk being gunned down on a college campus for engaging in debate with college students. Our college professor seems unbothered

Eh.

Late night isn't dying because of politics.

It's dying because like the rest of linear TV, people have more options than ever.

You used to watch late night to see movie star interviews and previews to new movies. All that is widely available online now.

Live Sports is the only thing that commands must see big viewership.

And the guys who are doing late night now have just done it way too long now. Letterman and Leno had lasting power because they weren't as overexposed before taking the chair.

Kimmel has been mainstream since man show and been doing Live since mid 2000s. Colbert Report started like 2005 when I was in high school and has been doing late show 10 years now. Fallon was doing movies and such before tonight show.

Nobody beats Craig Ferguson though. He was the best.

I was Conan fan. Easily my favorite late night host since the few years of Carson that I was around for.

Indeed.

And imagine being a Disney exec tied to a long term, expensive unprofitable contract with Kimmel and you are granted an easy exit for cause

Gotta take it

I can only ascribe interest with time invested

Nsacpi, our PhD professor, has chosen to spend his time curiously

For example. He has spilled so much ink on

1. Germans taking down Trump

2. Russia collusion

3. The smiling teenager!

4. Bubba Wallace and the subway "THIS IS MAGA COUNTRY!!!!!"

5. Masks masks masks masks

6. Locking down young people bc he was scared. He was so proud of that!

7. Paul Pelosi being a victim of horrific right wing violence

8. Dental records of red states

9. #CRYPTOCRASH!!!!!

10. Hunter Biden Laptop Russia disinformation!!!

And so many more! (Hope hes getting his 8th covid booster!)

but when it comes to a guy on a college campus, debating college kids? Our college professor goes to quiet, then whataboutism

I beg you all... skip college kiddos. They are idiots. They are partisans. They are the people who create the miserable leftists we all try to avoid today

Yup, late night TV used to be a thing to just do. Now you can stream anything in the world. I could watch some late night content I don't care about, or King of the Hill, seems like an easy choice for me.

You're also right about access. Back in the day people didn't have access to stars like they do now, Now you can see their curated PR on Instagram. You can see them on Hot Ones or Chicken Shop Date, etc.

I don't reallyy agree with you about what made Leno and Letterman last. What made them last was quality writers and the right fanbases.

Craig Ferguson was great and should still have his show but that also counters your other point. Ferguson was a known actor before his late night show. The Drew Carey show was much bigger than the man show ever could be.

Also I'd add I think the issue is that the shows aren't geared towards modern audiencies. Clips, big moments, etc. do well. But I actually think the bigger problem these shows have vs. their older counterparts is lack of other comics. Johnny Carson used to regularly have comics on the show and their cross banter with guests made for great TV.
