I think there’s a clear ideological divide on this but that it’s driven as much by the political messaging of the past 30 years that sees Republicans explicitly frame their supporters as Patriots who must take America back from foreign, anti-American influences. It’s easier to be proud of America no matter what if you think you’re the “real” America and anything happening contrary to your values is the work of non-American agitators rather than the other half of Americans.

I actually think Democrats would do much better with groups they currently struggle with if they focused more on framing progressive causes as patriotic. But they’re run by political consultants who will tell them they’d lose 5 points from black LGBT women in Nevada if they embrace that message.

They were written and passed by Americans elected to public office by other Americans to govern America. Those are fundamentally American policies, whether you support them or not. So when asked if you’re proud of being an American, it’s easier to answer yes if all the things you hate about the country are sequestered into a box of anti-American sentiment. America is only as good as its people and leadership allow it to be.

No, but I think they are ever-evolving and that the right has increasingly sought to strictly define what they are.

That’s not good or bad. My point is that the left should seek to challenge that definition if they want to appeal to voters they’ve lost.

I mean you don't need to kowtow to thethe's jihad. Anyone with any study on empirical data knows that political violence much more commonly comes from right wing extremists.
