A New Jersey man was arrested Sunday for allegedly punching a straphanger during a confrontation on a Penn Station subway platform — with the victim dying hours after the violent clash, authorities said.

Nassadir Tate, 21, was charged with assault over the scuffle that unfolded on the downtown C/E subway platform at 34th St-Penn Station on Saturday night, according to the NYPD and law enforcement sources.

The scuffle began when a 55-year-old man accidentally bumped into the alleged perp on the subway platform, the sources said.

The confrontation escalated into a shouting match, and Tate then allegedly punched the older man in the face before running off, according to the sources.

Cops found the victim unconscious and unresponsive at the station just before 7 p.m.

He was rushed by EMS to Lenox Hill Hospital and pronounced dead — though it was not immediately clear what role the altercation had in his death.

Tate was picked up on Sunday, roughly 18 hours after the argument turned violent, according to sources.

The city’s medical examiner’s office will determine the straphanger’s cause of death, meaning Tate could potentially face additional charges.

The incident comes as the NYPD has increased its presence in the city’s transit system amid concerns of an uptick in crime underground.

The NYPD had deployed roughly 140 additional officers daily across subway and train systems in response to an overall increase in transit crime, according to the police.

While felony assaults in transit are up roughly 5.4% year-to-date through March 8 — signifying an increase in six incidents — the overall number has been trending downward since the beginning of the month, cops said.

Approximately 26% of felony assaults in the transit system this year have been committed against police officers, with another 9% occurring against MTA employees, authorities said.

The number of unprovoked transit assaults had dropped by over 24% so far in 2026, police said.

I was curious how this could be,
turns out, they hadn't yet determined cause of death so no charges could be pressed, until they know a crime was committed.

If the puncher, charged with assault, is deemed to have caused the dearth, he will be charged and held responsible for the death

We still have the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
Regardless the color of skin or origin of birth.

Just like Trump and E Jean Carrol.
He was innocent in the eyes of the law until, the court found, he wasn't

Call me crazy but someone who publicly asaults someone shouldnt be free the next day, especially when hes currently being investigated for the murder of a said person

Generally that attitude doesn’t apply to orgs that are 100% funded by government because it looks too much like straight grift.

Uhh... for profit company and charities are two wildly different things

Surely you understand that corporate CEOs are compensated by the value they are (believed) to be generating for shareholders?

NGOs are not at all like this. There are no financial disclosures, or success metrics. Who is firing them? Certainly no shareholders. What is their success? Is homelessness being reduced?

Point me to the success of the homeless situation in NYC? If someone solves, id be glad to pay them millions!
