John Jumper is from Arkansas. I give them credit for that!

It could be im misreading the table but the 2022 data show California 4th graders with higher math and reading scores than their Arkansan counterparts. Ditto for the 2022 data for 8th graders.

eh...this is a rather trivial point to make so i will respond in kind...the post immediately before mine (#6887) injected Arkansas into the conversation (inaccurately I might add given that NW Arkansas actually has a stunningly beautiful natural environment) i do feel a little bit badly...

Yes. But I don't think Silicon Valley has anything to worry about from Arkansas or any red or purple state. Its rivals are London, Beijing, Tel Aviv and to a lesser extent Singapore. Of course it has some rivals in this country but in deeply blue areas.

Median will not be affected by distributional changes. My preferred metric would be median household income adjusted for prices.

Some of Singapore's strongest period of growth had nothing to do with China. Before China opened up. About 10 years before.

It sure does. By any measure the standard living for the average person has never been higher. Not that everything is perfect. But the "tear it all down" view on the part of some strikes me as crazily dissonant from the world as it actually exists.

Mississippi is to be commended for dramatically improving their 4th grade reading test scores. It is a good thang when a state recognizes a shortcoming and comes up with a plan for improving upon it. Instead of saying look at all the crime and homelessness on NY subways. One approach may be...

Gotta look at latitude too. Ecuador is on eastern time but not next to the United States. Quito is closer to Washington than Singapore is to Beijing. You're making me think that certain stereotypes about Americans and geography might be true.

It's not just a theory. There's a big empirical literature on tax incidence.

    1. Folks speak English in Arkansas...kinda 2. Red states pursue low tax strategies So neither of the above fits in as part of the secret sauce for technological and economic advancement Also not to nitpick but Singapore is not "next" to China

Singapore is right on the equator. Hot and humid year round. It is about culture and opportunity. Not climate. In a very impressive way Singapore (and Tel Aviv) replicate much of the entrepreneurial culture of Silicon Valley. Arkansas and Oklahoma not so much. Austin to a small degree...

California has generated almost 500 unicorns in the past 5 years, about 10 times as many as Texas. It's only fair that Texas or Oklahoma should get BBB.

I don't rule out the possibility BBB is thinking along those lines. God bless them and their CEO.

A lot like railroads. Investors know something big when they see but have trouble calibrating the effects on the bottom line.
