The gap between what is owed and what is paid is estimated to be $600 billion per year (estimated four years ago) and growing. Not small potatoes. https://nationalpress.org/topic/tackling-the-tax-gap/

As probably the only REAL fiscal conservative here, I would like to see: 1) The GOP be brave, responsible and rational in how they cut spending. This ideally should include some entitlement reforms cuz that's where the money is spent. And better procurement practices for the Pentagon. 2) The...

Cuz we don't have unlimited capacity to produce more of everything. That's the whole idea of the benefits of specialization. Inevitably, producing more toasters shifts resources from elsewhere. It's a fantasy that we have all this untapped capacity and idle workers.

119th Congress or Red Wave In Adult Land

“To keep ourselves right in all things, we ought to hold fast to this principle: What I see as white I will believe to be black if the hierarchical church thus determines it.” (Ignatius de Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order–Spiritual Exercises (1522–1524), 13th Rule).

toasters is a metaphor...we don't want to be scaling up our production capacity in any of these low-end products...Trump is operating on a sort of Luddite mindset no miracle in job growth is going to occur as a result of tariffs we'll mostly see a reallocation of productive capacity (including...

That's sort of my point. You can't scale everything. Even in a country as large as ours. We should be leaning into our strengths not trying to be #1 at toasters. Trying to be #1 at toasters and other similar products will necessarily entail transfers from other parts of the economy. Do we...

One of the lesser appreciated aspects of Trumps tariffs is they represent an implicit subsidy of industries we don't have a comparative advantage at (low end manufacturing) by industries where we do have a comparative advantage (technology and services...in many cases industries of the future...

Yes. Many Americans will eventually work at making toasters and other low value-added products if this strategy bears fruit. The problem is they could otherwise be working doing other thangs we actually have a comparative advantage at. Opportunity costs and all that jazz.

Short-run pain: Make consumers stop buying foreign toasters. Long-run suffering: Eventually America starts making toasters! But they're more expensive & the jobs making them are worse than the ones they replaced. (Swap any manufactured import for "toaster" & this still true.) But hey we'll be...

As a logical proposition I don't think unbanning a previously banned news organization refutes the argument that the original banning represented an attack on press freedoms. but hey that's just logic
