I think Murphy being in CF, the position of DiMaggio and Mantle, versus at 1B would've given him extra juice as well. And at the time Murph was considered an elite defender in CF, before we had metrics to show otherwise.

Very much so. Had Dale Murphy put up the exact same career (including lack of postseason appearances) in New York, Boston, Chicago, or LA he would be in the Hall today. Had he done it as a Yankee he likely would've been in no later than his second ballot.

Sometimes even good coaches fail to resonate with the guys they are teaching. Maybe whatever Seitzer was doing with them got stale, or the guys started tuning him out. It's a lot easier to get rid of coaches than to rebuild the roster.
