Elder might have some limited value as the last player in a big trade. Most teams can use a AAA shuttle guy who can throw five innings and give up three runs against a big league lineup. But he's a tip-the-trade-over-the-top throw-in piece, not someone another team has any active interest in.

I suppose it's possible that the month-long delay in hiring Weiss was the product of an actual schism within the front office and there was a struggle over which direction to take the managerial hire -- Anthopolous wanted someone younger and outside the organizational culture, Snitker and others...

Hiring Weiss does not exactly communicate "We conducted the most thorough possible search and considered a wide, diverse group of possible candidates."
