I am just going all in on irrational Elder enthusiasm. He is gonna be top 5 in the Cy Young voting, and God is clearing a path for him.

What do you guys expect AA to say at this point? “Please, I am desperate to add a starter and will pay any price!.” Even if he is still working on something, his negotiating position has to be “we are fine going into the season with the guys we have.” Frankly, my default expectation was Holmes...

Even hypothetically speaking, salary cap is a complete nonstarter unless it pegged to a specific percentage of league revenues equal to or greater than what the players get currently. That is only feasible if owners all open their books to such a degree that MLBPA can’t argue that they are...

Hefner is gonna turn Elder into a 3.50 ERA guy, and that will solve all our problems. No worries.

I’m guessing it is a variance thing—at median we might be basically tied, but the 80th percentile Braves might be much better than the 80th percentile Mets team. So in the scenarios where we make the playoffs, you are looking mostly at pretty strong teams.

If we time it right, I bet we could waive and reclaim Suarez at least once more before Spring Training.

Of course it is relevant. That’s how defense is measured. WAR, in whichever formulation, is Def + Pos + Off. The defensive component (DRS, UZR, OAA) is measured against other players at the same position. When he was +20 runs better than the average left fielder in the 80s, that meant he got...

Yes I agree, the stat pages are there for all to look at, and they are very easy to read. BRef: Fangraphs: I believe you are just looking at the "Defense" column, which is a runs-based equivalent to "dWAR" on BRef. These stats include a positional adjustment, not just fielding metrics...

FG and BBref both use the same defensive numbers, Total Zone, for the 90s. These are the exact same numbers in his Fangraphs WAR pre-2002. I have no idea what distinction you are making.

This is a good point. These numbers don't include the playoffs, so he is missing the -96 WAR he earned by torching the Pirates' season on that play.

Barry Bonds is the greatest defensive left fielder in history and its isn't close. He is not overrated. Even among all outfielders, he trails only Andruw and Clemente: At ages 30-33, 1995-1998--so just pre-"I'm mad about McGwire/Sosa and will do sterioids even harder than them"--he put up...

To be an annoying stat pedant, it’s ~110 OPS+, which is comfortably above average. So there. That’s a pretty drastic split (~47 OPS+ against LHB, just lights out), especially for a lefty who has already has a great change, which should be a strong weapon against RHB. Not burying the kid or...

That line against righties is a bit concerning. League average in Carolina League is .231/.335/.330.
