Fangraphs: What, exactly, are the Braves up to?

I still like the idea of Imanaga, and it looks like—even with his price rising somewhat in the wake of the Dodgers' signings—he can likely be had for something around 5/$100m. That's not bad for someone who presents more risk (coming to the US following sterling NPB results, but less raw stuff...

Obviously the Braves have little use for Bellinger at this point, but Snell would be very interesting if he overplays his demands hand and finds himself without a viable long-term suitor. If that were to transpire, I wonder if he’d take something like 3/$85 with an opt-out after the second year.

What are these many other ways to get “proven durable” pitching (by which you presumably mean 200+ IP pitchers) without paying tons of money? Developing your own seems to be the only other way, and that takes more than one solitary offseason to effect.

Durability is proven until it’s not. I don’t think investing large sums in pitcher health is smart—you invest in quality and hope they pitch enough to make it worthwhile.

I think the NFL has too much parity. I’d prefer something closer to the NBA model, if we’re discussing a hard-cap.

Assessments of likelihood will vary, but the FO clearly banking on those players “breaking out,” which is why they see these as evidently wise moves (as opposed to moves made to merely throw crap at the metaphorical wall, which is what some commenters seem to believe is their plan).

Heading into the off-season, when predictions for Yamamoto were in the 8/$190m to 9/$225m range, it seemed like he could represent the rare “FA Ace” that presents good value. Apparently that was a collective mis-reading of his market, however, if these 10+ year, $300+m rumblings are to be...

I really do think this has to be his angle. And it also accounts for the scramble to consolidate/clear forty-man slots, as you need open roster spaces to temporarily house the churned-through bad contracts without losing players you value.

I’m here for it—I just don’t think the motivating impulse for these marginal machinations is “stay under a certain budget,” given that the luxury tax hit keeps going up.

My favorite part is that, in all likelihood, such a rotation means Stanton is a short-side platoon partner for Verdugo. Tough distribution of resources there—but, it’s the Yankees, so they’ll muddle through.

The Yankees traded a decent suite of young pitching to acquire Soto for a mere year instead of giving Bellinger a stupid contract. That’s telling re where his market is. At this point, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if he ends up back with the Cubs.

I hate Option 1 (especially if it includes Smith-Shawver). Option 2 isn’t really an option, given there’s no target from the Orioles. Generally, I don’t think the team is planning on, or particularly interested in, trading Iglesias.

Padres definitely say no, but it’s not as crazy a proposition as it should be, given their purported desire to shed salary.
