    Global Events & Politics Überthread

They’re behind every problem in this region says the person explaining one of the problems in the region is how American soldiers were dying in Iraq.

Hard to take the people seriously who are claiming that we get to just choose whether or not more war happens, like Iran doesn’t have any agency when we attack them on their soil.

I don’t see any value in symbols generally and don’t care about shared identity or history in the abstract. To me a country or people is only of any value in terms of what it means to those people practically. I know I’m out of the mainstream on this, but I don’t need a piece of fabric to remind...

In addition to Trump’s usual insanity, it’s fucking gross how horny the cult is for violence.

People are really, really fucking weird about flags. I’ll never understand the importance of such a useless symbol.

Many experts have a vested interest in the government bombing things.

I just acknowledged that every other modern President has done it and that it was almost always wrong. I’ve actively given Trump credit for his overall approach to war, particularly in the first couple months of his term. But there is no good argument Iran posed us enough of a threat to strike.

I recognize some of the gaps in my argument, but this is more of a core belief thing for me. I object morally to acts of aggression absent clear and immediate danger, and economic sanctions impact as many or more people in the countries being sanctioned as a bomb might. There’s a reason I’m not...

I think the deal Trump pulled us out of was working just fine, and favor peace through cooperation.

My issue is that it causes more social unrest and radicalism which isn’t that expensive and I’d argue is more dangerous to the average American than a direct assault from a foreign adversary.

I know this is lazy commentary, but there’s a small, dumb part of me that is willing to believe he was so let down by the toothlessness of the military parade that he made something go boom.

Incorrect. The issue is that we’ve just constantly put up with Presidents of both parties doing shit they shouldn’t be doing. I’d have been open to impeaching any of the other Presidents that bombed other countries we weren’t at war with.

I’m actually rather pessimistic on the positive impacts of sanctions for peace and security, though that’s obviously not a Trump-centric gripe. The thing about authoritarian regimes is they don’t much care about their people, so I find sanctions to mostly be a punitive measure against the people...

How dare Biden put us at risk by allowing in people from Iran in that could attacks us if Trump bombed Iran when they didn’t do anything to us?

Not the story of the night here, but it’s kind of funny that the President of the United States is promoting his own merch during the bombing of another country and that’s just something we don’t even bother to acknowledge anymore.

The United States was in positively no danger from Iran absent any act of aggression and we have committed an act of aggression. Impeach the fucker. “Now is the time for peace” says the guy who bombed the other country first. Fuck out of here.

Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

This is not useful in advancing national security. If a student applying for a visa were to pose a threat to public safety, presumably the federal government would be able to accomplish any necessary investigations without requiring students abandon their right to privacy from the public as a whole.

One additional thought to tie my last two posts together and clarify my general point. It’s difficult to listen to McBride’s interview with Klein and Fetterman’s own criticisms of the left and not see the difference in approach. McBride’s overall thesis is her statement that voters will see...
