GDT 5/16/25: Braves @ Red Sox - Sale vs Crochet

Calling .300 a #3 is really just a semantics thing. Defining grades as standard deviations from the mean roughly puts grade 50 at .320, grade 60 at .300, grade 70 at .280 and grade 80 at .260. Then we somewhat lazily call the grade 50 an average MLB SP, which is a 2 win player..which is roughly...

GDT 5/16/25: Braves @ Red Sox - Sale vs Crochet

I’m guessing that table didn’t post from my phone as expected. The last 3 digits after the decimal are their xwOBA so far. As gold as we think AJ has been, .355 is about as good as a 6th SP.

GDT 5/16/25: Braves @ Red Sox - Sale vs Crochet

Sale has pitched like a #3 this year, but definitely looks better of late. Everyone else has been mediocre or worse based on xwOBA. 1Sale, Chris 967967100.021559.300 Graphs 2Schwellenbach, Spencer 817817100.020647.326 Graphs 3Holmes, Grant 755755100.016233.345 Graphs 4Elder, Bryce...

GDT 5/16/25: Braves @ Red Sox - Sale vs Crochet

It’s not as important to use Baldwin up by 3. The time to use Baldwin was any PA where he was guaranteed to face a RHP and the score was close.

GDT 5/16/25: Braves @ Red Sox - Sale vs Crochet

Snit needs to do a better job getting Baldwin a PA vs RHP in close games.

I feel like Baldwin should have hit for Allen there.

Leave it to Albies to reach out and hit a breaking ball while off balance on a pitch breaking into him.

    Acuna Update

In any given ST Acuna gets 30-50 PAs. I would expect he's in Atlanta the day after he gets 30-40 AAA PAs. He's currently at 6.

5/15: AJSS and the ROY batting second in the Business Man’s Special

I'm struggling to see the appeal of Kimbrel and his .346 xwOBA in AAA. Is it his 92.7 mph fastball that's so attractive? Or the 4.91 BB/9 rate so far in the minors? Which of those pieces of data is most exciting?

    05/12 Nats @ Braves A National Embarrassment

White, Verdugo, Allen and Baldwin would make a pretty good bench. Too bad the 3 worst players of the bunch are starters.

GDT 5/11 Mama Tried Edition: Sale and Drake and win one for Cy’s Mom

So…angry Sale can pump 98 at the top of the zone and just blow guys away at 80+ pitches.

GDT 5/10/25: Braves @ Pirates - Beat the Bucs

I don’t think Albies could put together worse PAs if he batted with his eyes closed.

Some Personal Thoughts On Brian Snitker

Snit has always hurt the team, and it tends to become very apparent in October when opposing managers run circles around him. He is a negative that the talent on the roster overcomes because the collection of talent is exceptional. I never understood the "he's a great leader of men" narrative...

GDT 5/8/77 Beat the Reds to Schwell en Bach.

It's good Allen is contributing in some way because he's hitting like a pitcher.

GDT 5/8/77 Beat the Reds to Schwell en Bach.

I understand offense is different now, but it doesn’t seem like it should be so hard to lay down a bunt and hit a fly ball to win a game.

Leave it to Albies to have an absolutely terrible AB.

How in the world does anyone ever hit that cutter at 97?

GDT 5/8/77 Beat the Reds to Schwell en Bach.

Not a huge fan of running for the best hitter on the team in the 8th of a tie game

Verdugo is now below a .700 ops. Acuna can’t get back soon enough.
