WOW Uggla and BJ OUT! GDT 8/13

Is a 4.3% difference in outs made significant? In baseball, hell yeah it's significant. Is the difference in a .300 On base percentage and a .343 on base percentage, for example, significant? The difference in those numbers is that the guy with the .300 OBP makes outs 4.3% more often than the...

WOW Uggla and BJ OUT! GDT 8/13

You are correct about one thing, the results speak louder than words. With RISP Simmons makes outs 75% of the time, Uggla makes outs 71.7% of the time. Simmons has 108 ABs with RISP with 24 RBI which is a ratio of .222. Uggla has 31 RBI in only 85 ABS with RISP, a ratio of .364. The walks and...

WOW Uggla and BJ OUT! GDT 8/13

Well he gets on base more often and hits for more power, for starters.

    8-11-2013 Marlins at Braves

95 National Leaguers have at least 300 plate appearances. 88 of them have fewer Home Runs than Dan Uggla. 91 of them have fewer walks. Translated: He is 7th in the NL in homers and 4th in walks. Those things have value. Yeah, his batting average is horrendous, but it simply does not tell the...

    Uggla needs to sit...

    1. Only 6 players in the NL have hit more homers than Uggla 2. Only 3 players have walked more These two things have great value, despite his awful batting average.

    Best Baseball Player --- Ever

    1. Ruth: In a class by himself. Batting average close to Cobb. Homers and Walks aren't in the same time zone. Ruth would have been one of the top pitchers of all time. 2. Williams: War years and defense keep him at 2. 3. Wagner 4. Bonds, even with the roid factor in there. 5. Cobb

Simmons not voted best defensive player among coaches.

I agree with this. I think that defensive metrics are valuable in deciding who is the best at each position. However I am convinced that they are very inaccurate for things such as runs saved and DWar. Good offense trumps good defense every time.

    GDT 8/5/2013 Braves vs Nationals

You missed my point. I was pretty sure that Huddys numbers were pretty much in line with the others. Although I would rather have him than not, we can find 3-4 starters for the playoffs pretty easily without him.

    What were Hudson's numbers?
  10. J

    Don't look now, but

at the 2/3 mark of the season, as of last night, the Braves are second in the NL in runs scored, and second in the NL in fewest runs allowed. That didn't happen just in the first 13 games.

    Bryce Harper Megathread

If you really think that is true, consider these numbers. Teams play 162 games per season, I have always analysed a season based on 27 game blocks, because each one of them represents 1/6 of the season, they are each roughly one month's worth of games, and 27 games will pretty much balance...

Of course we are 5-2 vs. them in games started by those three this season.

    Braves Trade Deadline Rumors

I just double-checked Peavy's numbers. He has been pretty pedestrian since 2008, when he has played. Why we would get into a bidding war for his services is beyond me. There's no need for him in the regular season, and I'm not positive he'd be in our top three for the playoffs.

    Braves Trade Deadline Rumors

Feliz hasn't pitched in over a year, and Harrison has pitched 10 innings this season with an ERA over 8. Locke was a marginal prospect, at best, who was traded over four years ago, but I agree with your main point.

We have one already. His name is Andrelton Simmons. The wisdom of this trade is not even remotely debatable.

    Braves Trade Deadline Rumors

Correct. The eight game lead with two months to go take a lot of pressure off of the need to trade for a starter. The situation ABSOLUTELY does not dictate trading a long-term asset for a mid range (which is all we could get, at best) starter. jc

    Braves Trade Deadline Rumors

Likewise the Teixeira trade from Texas, which was a MUCH, MUCH bigger upgrade form the existing 1B situation than Headley for Johnson would ever be considered.

    Braves Trade Deadline Rumors

Likewise, what all-star team has Headley ever been on?

    Braves Trade Deadline Rumors

Yep, that's the thing that everyone misses (and in my humble opinion has missed for the last 20 years). If you have 8 relatively equal teams in the playoffs (ignoring the silly one game wild card game) the chances of any one team winning is 12.5%.
