Would people rather have Syndergaard at 1/21 or Verlander at effectively 2/50?

I think Verlander's brother qualifies as an insider in this case.

Definitely *less* painful in my view, but being locked in to years 5 and 6 would still be quite painful at $20m if he is toast.

I completely agree with you. It is a hard decision and truly could play out either way. Luck in the events following Freddie signing or not- a free agent hitting or not, guys getting hurt or not, prospects panning out or not, Freddie staying healthy or not- will determine success or failure just...

Around the League - 2021 Szn

I still think he got his leg, but its way closer than I remember it being. I remember thinking it was clearly the worst call I have ever seen. Now I can at least see what Meals might have been thinking. I also think you can see him mouth 'you missed' to the catcher after he makes the call.

Shocked by that. I remember seeing him walking around on the field after one of the playoff games and he had a significant limp.

The only way it makes some sense is if you have a self-imposed cap, which the Braves probably do.

I think we all need to be prepared for the reality that he's going to get a 5 or 6 year deal at $30m per year. I'm not happy about it, but I'm trying to be at peace with it. Seems a lot more likely than a) them letting him walk without an offer or b) getting him to lower the price.

In fairness Minor is the only one of the three who ever had a meaningful career afterwards. Their medical evaluations of Medlen and Beachy seem to have been, unfortunately, correct. I would agree that Soroka would be worth the gamble, but we also have no idea what they are being told by the...

Bowman listing Soroka as a non-tender candidate is...not something I saw coming. Hopefully not a signal about how the Braves feel his recovery is going. https://www.mlb.com/news/braves-2021-offseason-faq

I was about to say the same thing. I'm making up numbers entirely, but what if it was a five year deal that went: 35/35/30/20/20. Freddie gets 5/140, but if he's primarily a DH by year 5 its not crushing us quite as badly.

    Wash and the Shift

It feels like that 'massive advantage' isn't that massive though. For someone Freddie or Belt or Matt Carpenter or whoever that the shift hurts a lot, 'altering your approach at the plate' to beat the shift means slapping singles to the left side. I'm not sure that really is a 'massive...

    Wash and the Shift

Right. There are so many factors. Where is the pitcher comfortable pitching, and which pitches does he prefer to throw in which count? What are the hitters tendencies? Count, outs, score, etc. I'll leave that to the people with the big datasets and just assume that wherever they tell the second...

    Wash and the Shift

Based on my watching of games this year, they do modify the shift quite a bit mid AB. Riley was often running across the field during the middle of an AB based on the count. I haven't seen the data myself and would love to, but I'm pretty confident MLB teams have reviewed said data.

I have a weird affinity for Garcia and would love him at that 1/15 number. Soler at 1/8 would be an absolute no brainer. Enscheff, I assume you would be somewhat comfortable giving Freeman more money in exchange for a shorter deal? If he wants 5/150 and has something like that on the table...

For the most part, this is true- the vast majority of people won't stop attending games over it. I will say that in my own experience with this, I have still cheered for a team in this situation but have not felt the same kind of connection to it that I used to. I've loved following this Braves...

I certainly don't want to put my faith in Kyle Wright again, but I wouldn't hate him getting a couple of starts early next season. To me, he is a different case than most fringe guys. Usually with a AAAA guy, they just don't have the stuff to be a MLB caliber starter. For Wright, it seems to be...

Fair criticism. Just surprises me that everyone here seems to be completely writing him off. I think he’s a pretty clear favorite to be starting in CF to begin the season, and I won’t be shocked if he’s successful.

I think Pache is going to be a valuable CF for awhile. He’s 22. Plenty of adjustments to be made- some of which seemed to be made at AAA this year. As someone who thought we needed to move on from Riley at 3B in the early days of the season, I’m going to try to avoid making that mistake again.
