The biggest reason for optimism from this deal is, others have said, it seems to signal a willingness to spend big as opposed to worrying about the luxury tax.

Jeff Kent to the HOF and not Murphy

Adding to the 30/30 theme, Murphy was only the sixth player to ever accomplish the feat, and put up the eleventh such season in MLB history. Bobby Bonds had five of the ten 30/30 seasons in history prior to Murphy in 1983.

    2025-2026 offseason thread

I'm sure there was a dollar value and/or contract length for Diaz where it would have made sense in AA's mind to give up the pick. It's fair to assume that AA should have known Diaz wasn't going to sign for that amount, but I guess we can't blame him for shooting his shot and hoping the market...

Jeff Kent to the HOF and not Murphy

Also that he got to 30/30 in an era when that just wasn't happening. I counted seven such seasons in the 1980s. Murph's in 1983 was the first of them.

Jeff Kent to the HOF and not Murphy

I'm there with Andruw as well, although I do agree his case is better. Murphy was thought of as a good defensive CF in his days as evidence by the Gold Gloves, although we now know the flaws in their reasoning. But Andruw is pretty much universally acknowledged as the best defensive OF of...

Jeff Kent to the HOF and not Murphy

I want to clarify that the objective part of me doesn't disagree with your arguments against Murphy. You make good points, and I'd agree with you on all of them if he wasn't a former Brave and my favorite player growing up.

Jeff Kent to the HOF and not Murphy

His knees had a lot to do with it. Granted, he's pretty old now but he doesn't get around very well. Being such a big guy playing that much CF took its toll. Maybe if they had left him at first he would have stayed healthy a little longer too. Knee surgeries, treatments, rehab, etc...

Jeff Kent to the HOF and not Murphy

Yes because he's a Brave. I as a fan am under no obligation to be objective. And what @kgrecw said. He was one of the top five players in the game from 1982 through 1988. You could make an argument that he was #2 in the NL behind Schmidt, at least for the first few years of that period...

Jeff Kent to the HOF and not Murphy

Why does Murphy have to be the dividing line though? Let him in and then raise the bar.

Jeff Kent to the HOF and not Murphy

I know this isn't the way it should be done objectively, but I'm always going to look at it this way and a Braves and a Dale Murphy fan. Any hall of fame that includes Jim Rice, and Harold f**cking Baines should also include Dale Murphy. If Murph had played the bulk of his career in NY, CHI...

    New Manager Discussion

Can you imagine the gnashing of teeth if Vitello is the guy? Say goodbye to "The Braves Way" for sure. Shanks would have a stroke. I personally look forward to the Daddy hat (New Era version) and pimp coat for every home run hitter. The team needs a little personality. Plus this gets Tony...

    Minor League Thread Part Deux

Yet the Braves passed over the Golden Spikes winner, who played the same position, is much closer to MLB, and has similar physical ability... Yes, I'm still bitter about that one.

It has probably been said numerous times in this thread, but give me Suarez if for no other reason than it prevents the Braves from having to face him 3-4 times per year.

    Tex for Congress.

That sounds like more of an issue of how you manage stress and how you view the world than anything anyone else is doing. The inability to tolerate dissenting opinions is not something characteristic of a person qualified to challenge anyone else's intellect.

Hayden Harris Time! And a couple of other moves.

Perfect time to give him his look to see if there is something to the AAA numbers. There probably isn't, but what's the harm in blowing a couple of more games taking a flyer on him at this point?

    Tex for Congress.

If this is truly how you feel and not just internet blather, you deserve to spend your declining years miserable and alone. Not because of your political leanings, but because you put them over relationships with people who probably care for you. I have many dear relatives and a few friends...
