Well Tom, the point of the opener is this…
1. A RHP like Chavez forces the other team to stack the lineup with LHH.
2. The opener can be Ph for early in the game, removing one more punted Pa.
3. When the bulk inning pitcher comes in, he can face the bottom of the order a third time without facing the top of the order a 3rd time, therefore allowing him to face 20+ batters rather than 18.
It is an excellent way to maximize the effectiveness of a pitcher like Smyly.
