2022 Minor League rosters

Low A Augusta is the first to release theirs: https://www.milb.com/augusta/news/atlanta-braves-announce-greenjackets-opening-day-roster. Definitely some interesting pieces, but like most of our minor league affiliates, not a ton of depth of prospects. Only three of our top 30 are in Augusta.

Highlights for me:

-AJ Smith-Shawver and Adam Shoemaker both open in Low A. Huge upside guys out of high school from last year's draft, I'm pretty excited to see them open here instead of complex leagues. Glad they're being challenged.

-Our 4th rounder last year, SS Cal Conley, opens at Low A. He played there some last year.

-OF Kadon Morton and 1B Makhi Backstrom both open in Low A. They've spend a couple years at the complex league and finally get to full season ball. Definite upside guys

-Some pitchers I'm interested to see: LHP Kris Anglin and RHP Tyler Owens. Also, JJ Niekro (Phil's nephew) is on this team but I don't think he's much of a prospect.

High A Rome here: https://www.milb.com/rome/news/2022-rome-braves-opening-day-roster-released

Highlights for me:

-INF Vaughn Grissom is definitely the guy I'll be watching the most here.

-3B Justyn Henry-Malloy with an aggressive assignment here after a strong half season last year following the draft.

-Really intriguing arms here - the Munoz brothers both had moments in Low A last year. Seem like decent upside guys to watch.

-LHP Dylan Dodd, RHP Dylan Spain and RHP Andrew Hoffman are interesting names on the mound.

Gwinnett roster here: https://www.milb.com/gwinnett/news/atlanta-braves-announce-gwinnett-opening-night-roster

Highlights for me:

-Surprised to see SS Braden Shewmake get bumped to Triple A. Same with OF Justin Dean and OF/1B Greyson Jenista.

-Rotation should be fun: Touki, Muller, Elder at the top of it.

-Not really many other surprises here.

Everyone is going to laugh, but I'm not shocked at all at Shewmake.

I know he struggled, but we have two problems:
1. If Swanson get hurts like he usually does our current plan is Acria
2. AA is going to want to know if Shewmake can replace swanson.

I know everyone wants to dream about a stud like Correa at SS or wants to extend Swanson. I think AA is going to have to find some positions go go on the cheap given the current roster guarantees. This year we are going to try to get by on the cheap on the 4 and 5 starters.

IF Shewmake can play a solid SS and not embarrass himself at the plate I think AA would consider him at SS next year.

He's and odd guy b/c when we was drafted everyone said the one thing he could do is hit. Questions were defense and power. Now it seems like consensus he can play a good SS and not sure if he can hit. I wonder if we looked to make changes to his swing to get more power and its not going well.

If Smith-Shawver stays healthy I think he is gonna to fly up. Also excited to see if Backstrom can get on a roll.

I'd love to compare that to his college swing.

I think we may have tried to change his launch angle and it failed.

Maybe he's just a guy that needs to hit 300 to be a plus on offense. Obviously that is far from ideal. But if he can play a good shortstop and go 300/350/400 that is a good player. Better than Dansby's aggregate.

As I recall, people loved the hit tool and he could hit it hard. He just didn't have the launch angle for HR power. Doubles are good too if he's going to be hitting 8-9 and playing good Defense at SS.

Shewmake also hit a left-on-left homer today against a top 100 prospect in Cardinals LHP Matthew Liberatore.

Hooray for small samples!

I hope he does well. It would be great to have a solid option that doesn't force us to spend a ton of money at SS. OR have another option to trade to fill another hole. Or maybe be a super utility.

He's listed at 24 years old now. So we likely have him controlled through 30 at this point.

If he can hit 300… only 14 players hit for 300 last year. Not sure that’s remotely realistic for Shewmake. If he hits .270/.320/.370, that’s probably not going to cut it for a contending team unless his defense is plus plus.

Shewmake has started the season 5-8 with a HR. If he can just be a 2.0 WAR player where we can spend money elsewhere that would be fantastic.
