2024 MLB Draft

They've chosen a pitcher first in the last 5 drafts, including a right-handed pitcher the last 4 drafts.

Maybe with the surprising struggles we've had on offense this year (and the spotlight that's put on the severe lack of impact position players in our high minors), perhaps they'll finally go with a position guy (college outfielder?) in the first round.

Where they pick high level offensive prospects are generally gone.

From what I understand, this a pretty weak prep class. I would expect us to stick with college level players. Selfishly, I would like to see us take Christian Moore in the 1st or Blake Burke in the 2nd.

I know a team shouldn't draft for need in the baseball draft and I expect the Braves will follow that rule of thumb. There's really not an OF prospect in full-season ball right now (In the FCL, Guanipa looks promising and Glod and Junior Garcia are at least interesting). Of course, if you draft pitching early, that can be moved for position players (which the Braves have done). Unless they have a particular position player targeted, I'm guessing a college pitcher.

I'm always in the draft BPA camp. OF is a need because Acuna is out for the year and Harris has been out a while too.

Injuries are always a thing but we have Kelenic, Harris, and Acuna under contract through 2028.

24. Atlanta Braves: SHP Jurrangelo Cijntje, Mississippi State

Cijntje has long been on the 2024 draft radar due to his unique profile as a switch pitcher. He is a legitimate first-round talent from the right side who has drawn comparisons to Marcus Stroman due in part to his undersized 5'11" frame, while offering more of a reliever profile while working from a low arm slot as a lefty.

He might benefit from focusing solely on pitching right-handed, and it will be interesting to see how he is utilized at the onset of his pro career. The Braves have a great track record of developing pitchers, so this would be an ideal landing spot for his future development.

24. Atlanta Braves

USA Today: Brody Brecht, RHP, Iowa

Bleacher Report: Jurrangelo Cijntje, RHP/LHP, Mississippi State

MLB.com: Brody Brecht, RHP, Iowa

Pitcher List: Walker Janek, C, Sam Houston

Brecht offers efficiency at the mound and Cijntje's switch-pitching brings versatility to Atlanta. Janek is right with Lomavita as the top prospect at the position. The Conference USA 2024 Defensive Player of the Year and Buster Posey Award winner (given to the best catcher in college baseball), Janek shows power from the plate but needs to improve on chasing pitches.

Bleacher Report: "[Cijntje] might benefit from focusing solely on pitching right-handed, and it will be interesting to see how he is utilized at the onset of his pro career. The Braves have a great track record of developing pitchers, so this would be an ideal landing spot for his future development."

Pitcher List: "Janek has an argument to be made as the best catcher in the class. His defense is good enough to stick behind the plate with plus arm strength... Coming from a small school is the only reason there is not more confidence in Janek’s profile, due to the perceived lack of competition."

I'm always BPA as well. I just wish they had an at least mid-ceiling OF that they can park in AA in a year or two so we are not burning up the waiver wire in the case of injuries. Obviously, this year has been cursed for the Braves in that regard. The guy I'm looking for probably isn't a first-rounder. I had some hope for a guy like Franklin V, but he just can't stay healthy.

24. Braves: Caleb Lomavita, C, California (No. 33)
His chase rate is scaring some teams off, but he has power and some speed as a backstop who can catch and throw. A bit enigmatic, it’s tough to find a home for him yet received the most votes for best catcher in the class in the executive poll.

24. Braves: Brody Brecht, RHP, Iowa (No. 21)
The hard-throwing Brecht gets the nod over Cijntje from the college pitching sector. If they want a high school pitcher, California prepster Braylon Doughty’s name comes up quite a bit here.

I do like Brody Brecht among the pitchers that have been mocked to us. The way they talk up his fastball and slider combo, it sounds like it is Strider-esque. Main issue is command.

William Schmidt is the HS pitcher I like best, with a mid-90s fastball and a great curve that generates a lot of spin.

Looks like Brecht could go as high as 13-15 or as low as to late first.

I don't know Cijntje from Adam, but these write-ups are not terribly encouraging.

"He's an ambidextrous pitcher, which is really cool, but MLB teams probably won't let him do that in the pros. But if he can focus entirely on throwing with just his right hand then maybe he'll develop to the point where he'll justify his draft position."

From Law today

24. Atlanta: Carter Johnson, SS, Oxford HS (Ala.)

Atlanta might be Brecht’s floor, and I’ve heard them with the cluster of high school pitchers in play anywhere from here to the top of the second round — Sloan, Kash Mayfield, Schmidt, and particularly Braylon Doughty. They’re also a possible fit for Lindsey. Beyond Brecht, I haven’t heard them specifically with any college guys.

I hope the Braves don't fall for a gimmick like this... if they do, I will have lost all faith in AA and companies ability to draft intelligently.

Lots of gimmicks being mocked to the Braves, between ambidexterity and breaking the fourth-wall. Either way, based on recent history, we shouldn’t expect anything but someone with a gun in the first act.
