2025 Trade Deadline Thread

We have a relatively easy schedule until the break, so this 12 game stretch likely decides if we are buyers or sellers.

Assuming we are sellers I would say our most valuable commodities we would actually sell are Murphy, Ozuna, Pierce Johnson, Lee, and Bummer.

But what about Grant Holmes? Has he done enough that you think he's a rotation fixture or do you think we should sell high? For reference, he has a 3.34 ERA and a 3.80 FIP since the start of May (11 starts and 62 innings). Currently he's 10th in the NL in K's and 6th in K/9. But he's 29 and he's been a career minor leaguer up until a year ago.

I keep Holmes, Lee and Bummer for 2026 unless some team is willing to provide us with valuable prospects (not happening).

I do a soft sell and try to sell Ozuna, Iglesias, and Pierce Johnson even though Pierce is signed through 2026 (club option for 7 million -- buyout for 250k). At the same time, I see if there are any valuable relievers signed at least through 2026 to see if they can help us for next year. It's really a shame Ozuna is playing through a bad hip. At one point, he could've netted us a decent player. I wait until the offseason to deal with the Baldwin/Murphy situation.

I move Murphy, Ozuna, and, if anyone would take him, Iglesias. Get as much talent in positions of weakness for us as we can (notably SS and OF).

I also wouldn't have Olson off limits. He's signed for a bit but that contract could look ugly soon.

Olson and Acuna are the only hitters we can really rely on. Trading Olson opens up another hole to address with a lesser player. Roll with the core you've built and hope Albies and Harris can figure it out. Fix SS with Bichette or a young SS you get in return for say Murphy and roll with it.

An important tidbit is the Pirates also added cash, which tells me AA may have zero dollars to spend at the deadline.

No cash to spend. Sale out for likely the rest of the season. AJSS and Lopez out for the season. 4 position players hitting like pitchers. 7 games under .500 (I can't even remember the actual record anymore). The only help coming back is an OFer with an exit velocity of 86 in AAA.

It's very hard to envision this team being buyers at the deadline. Be ready to trade the rentals and Murphy. A solid Murphy trade could very well fix a roster hole for 2026 and beyond.

Remember when a bunch of us said that another starter should’ve been acquired in the off-season because the health of Sale, Lopez, and Strider couldn’t be depended on?
No money for that. The gamble was we’d win enough to win this crappy division or at least make the playoffs - and that the injury and suck ass bug wouldn’t be this severe.
Still might work out if we can add a pitcher at the deadline…. If we can gain enough ground in a month to warrant such….
