I want to see some good control out of Newcomb tonight. The BBs are the only thing standing between him and the majors right now. His BAA is an excellent .236 and his .311 BABIP shows that's legit. He's striking out a batter an inning. He's great at keeping the ball in the park. He's got everything you want except control. I still have high hopes he'll improve his control. When his mechanics are good he's able to locate. It's when his delivery gets out of sync that he struggles and the walks come in bunches.

Five innings of one-run ball by Povse with two walks and 10 Ks. Time for him to take Barker's spot in Mississippi.

Two scoreless innings of relief with five Ks for Josh Graham in Rome. I really like him. Former catcher at Oregon, he was our fourth rounder last year.

With improved command, this guy could legitimately be a Jon Lester type of lefty that slots in at the top of a roation.

I agree with Jim Callis about Newcomb (listen to his interview with Bill Shanks recently covering the draft).

I believe it will eventually click for Newcomb. He has a good easy delivery that is very repeatable. Imho, playing for a small college really stunted a lot of his growth.

Hopefully you're right, I am not saying he will or won't but whether it does click for him or doesn't I don't see the often repeated Lester comps. Lester didn't have as many issues like this as Callis noted in that interview.

yep. time to see what he can do at the next level.

anybody know how hard he's throwing these days?

I was there Friday night and according to the stadium gun (take it with a grain of salt), he was topping out around 91. Was consistently between 88 and 90. Seemed to my untrained eye that he was throwing a little harder than that. May have just seemed that way since he's so tall. Most of his 10 k's we're due to throwing the ball by people.
