Ellis and Newcomb both in Mississippi. Should be interesting. I wonder when we'll get to see both of those in AAA. Newcomb's good work gets overlooked a little with all the focus on his command. In spite of walking 4.79 per 9, Newcomb still boasts a FIP of 3.11. He's striking out over a batter an inning and has given up just 1 HR in 62 IP. If he can keep the ball in the park and keep striking guys out at a high rate, he'll be a very good pitcher in the majors. If his command improves there's no limit to what this kid could do.

I'm trying to be patient with Touki but it is hard. I keep reminding myself he was a late arrival to pitching and is still rawer than some high schoolers picked this year. I just want to see some improvement. See some stuff start to click.

Yeah, in addition to that, he's also still 2 years younger than AJ Puk. He definitely has the stuff to miss bats, so there's still plenty of time for things to click for him.

Touki is only 19.. just came off a dominant start and has really been improving all spring. his May Whip was a little under 1.3 and that was with 18 BB in 27 IP... his ability to miss bats is incredible. He can season in the minors for another 3 years for all I care... He can be special!! I also agree on Newcomb..I think his last few starts he has been tinkering with things as his hits have gone up, but his command has gotten a bit better. I would not be surprised at all to see a truly dominate start from him within the next few starts. and once that happens, I expect him to dominate AA until he is promoted..
 
I try not to worry about pitchers too much, they are so volatile from year to year in the minors that it seems that the only way to find out their true potential is trial by fire in MLB (see teheran, remember that awful AAA year he had?)

When I saw Ellis live a few weeks ago, he was nailing his spots and working efficiently. The home plate ump was pretty lousy on some high calls and ,IMO, probably cost Ellis 2 walks that game.

which brings me to this; I wonder how much the lower umpire quality in the minor leagues can give a false image of a pitcher's command and control ability? You would think the guys who work the corners the best would be hurt the most
 
Meneses leading the CL in batting and having a monster night tonight. Old for High A, but has had a couple of setbacks and got started a year later than most Latin prospects. Repeating High A, so I don't know what else he has to prove at that level. I'm wondering if he ends up in Mississippi for the second half.
 
Typical Newcomb start so far. Lots of Ks, not much contact, but too many BBs. If they can ever get this kids motion and release point consistent, lookout.
