6/18 SATURDAY MINORS final... Allard shines, Ellis doesn't

Prospects or not?

Two pitchers who have been totally under the radar, probably because they were Braves draft picks instead of high-profile acquisitions, have been the two hottest pitchers in the system aside from Ellis.

Matt Withrow, 22, the Braves' 6th-round pick in 2015, is 4-0, 2.36 in his last five starts at Advanced Class A Carolina, with 35 strikeouts in 27 innings. His most recent outing, Friday, was 6.1 innings of shutout ball with eight strikeouts against three hits allowed. Withrow, 22, is 6-5, 235, and a product of the mighty Texas Tech program, which has returned to the CWS this season.

Pitching for an even more moribund team at Rome, Patrick Weigel, 21, the Braves' seventh-round pick (right after Withrow) is 3-0 over his last seven starts, not having lost since May 16. He has a 2.23 ERA in that span (40 innings) with 43 strikeouts. But Weigel, 6-6, 220, from the University of Houston, has dialed it up even more in June: in three starts this month, he has allowed only one earned run over 19 innings with 19 strikeouts and three walks.

Earlier in the year, Weigel lost three straight starts for Rome despite allowing eight runs over 17 innings.

Expect both right-handers to be promoted at the all-star break.

Lots of good arms in action today.

Povse has been backsliding a bit - be nice to see both him and Allard get going.

Also first AAA start for Ellis - go get em young man!

Povse been great. Through six with just 2 unearned runs. Meneses still flowing 4-4. Padding those stats again today.

About to head to the barons game. Looking for a strong game from Newcomb.

Meneses still flowing 4-4.

Newcomb...

6.0 ip 3 h 2 er 0 bb 4 k

So between newcomb and allard not a bb yet (newcomb still pitching)... I love this with our farm wide issue with walks

Dustin Peterson just had a nine pitch at-bat for a walk. For a young power hitter he has really good plate discipline.

Love seeing no walks from our 2 biggest pitching prospects. That's a few really good games in a row for Newcomb with good control.
