A Step Closer to the Chop Being Gone

I will be sad to see the chop go, but I do know it hurts some of us Natives. Maybe it is time. I think if we're going to change the chop, why not go ahead and change our name? Don't want to have to deal with this twice.

Atlanta Chippers
Atlanta Peaches
Atlanta Swamp Things (haha)

If we were the Atlanta Chippers, we could change the chop into the chip!

Let's just go all the way and be the Atlanta Neutrals.

I mean, I know the line is arbitrary to some, and I’m probably biased, but I don’t see the name Braves and a tomahawk chop as equivalent to the name Redskins. Redskins is literally a racial slur. To me, naming a team the Indians is the same as naming it the Cowboys. I mean, is the name San Diego Aztecs also offensive? What about the Fighting Irish?

Ahh well, small price to pay for other social injustices being corrected I suppose.

The thing is people aren’t fighting for any of these team’s names. They are fighting against change and what the change represents. I mean if the Redskins had been originally named the Elephants for example nobody would be going we need to change the name to Redskins. If the people who originally named the teams had been more thoughtful and sensitive at the beginning we wouldn’t have these issues.

As for a team name how bout The Atlanta Chokers. It represents what the history of Atlanta sports is all about. Plus you could maybe make some badass uniforms.

It’s just strange because I see the Braves name even the chop as a very positive thing. You don’t name the team you love after something negative. You name it after something you respect. The chop is done at key points of the game as a positive to show the fierce attitude of Braves.

I can to totally understand how the Redskins name could be seen as negative. I just see the Braves as a total positive. It’s the Native American equivalent to the New England Patriots in my eyes. I have a ton of Native American blood flowing thru my veins also btw.

I wonder how it will resonate with fans in attendance. I still plan on doing my own chop when I'm at a game. I dont think I'm alone in saying that. They cant make the fans stop it from being done organically

And if fans continue to do it "organically" and offended people complain, the franchise will then be left with no choice other than to change the name.

Ever notice there's no chop at Falcons or Hawks games?

I wonder why?

People really need to redirect their anger from the Braves to Deion. It's his fault.

That's just it - all ado about nothing.

Had a friend that thought he could get under my political skin yesterday - told me he had seen the story that there could be pressure to do away with the name Tar Heels because of things it represented during Confederate times.

Couldn't help but laugh when I saw the look in his eyes when I said I couldn't care less and that they can change the name to Blue Devils as far as I'm concerned - I still know who Michael Jordan played for.

Same thing with The Big Three, Hammerin' Hank, Murph, Chipper, etc. - who gives a *hit about what it says on the jersey as long as the jersey's the right color???

Let me guess - you're one who organically refuses to wear a mask because it infringes on your rights.

Go get 'em - "You ain't telling me what to do. I'll show you and be *amn proud about it from my ICU bed!!!"

I've been cheering for the Braves since I was 5 or 6 and they were in Milwaukee. I did not choose to cheer for them because of the team name. They (along with the Cardinals to a lesser extent due to KMOX radio) were the hometown teams prior to the Twins' arrival in 1961. Their name could have been the Beekeepers or Prosecuting Attorneys and it wouldn't have mattered to me. Still doesn't. I'm in no position to be the arbiter of what is and isn't offensive in the gray areas of the whole team name/mascot/cheers issue (I can it figure out when it's blatant). I'll leave that to others. My point is, I am not attached to the Braves' team name or the Native American symbols and characterizations that have somehow been attached--often inappropriately--to that name.

Not completely sure I'm not in favor of a name change to be honest. Kinda salivating over how much it would make all my memorabilia worth - I might actually be able to retire before I need home health care!!!
