Starting a new thread for when I see something stupid or horrifying but largely apolitical. The people saying it might be clearly to the left or right, but I’m sick of using TRHLIM to complain about AI evangelists or tech bros.

This shit is so fucking grim, man. I don’t disagree that we should maintain our focus on the actual academic development of students, but the lesson that “people will put up with a lot as long as you’re good at math” just serves to reinforce abusive and antisocial behavior. Perhaps we could aim higher and teach children to be both good at math and not be little sociopaths.

I've always been good at math, but being able to have a strong personality and get along with people has served me much better for things like finding a partner, advancing in career, and having a wonderful social circle.

My wife is pretty anti social. She grew up in private school her whole life, never had a job. And she struggle to connect with people. I told her, no matter how much money we have, our kids will work jobs in their teen years. Its the greatest way to learn how to connect with people

It’s also the skill set that will continue to have value as technological improvements lower the demand for people who are just good at math or operations.
