AJC And Braves Beat Writer Justin Toscano Part Ways

What do we think happened? I have five bucks on the AJC trying to force him to use AI to generate game stories and he said no.

Newspapers have been dying a slow death for a while sadly.

A lot of the regional beat writers who worked for their big regional papers went to The Athletic, which got bought by the Times. Can't remember if the Times is trying to unload it but they said it's lost a bunch of money.

No offense to DOB or Schultz, but I didn't like their AJC stuff, so I sure as hell wasn't going to subscribe to the Athletic to read their writing. A few high profile guys like Stark or Rosenthal that's different, because I tend to enjoy their long form pieces.

I know you know this, since you've worked in the industry.

Didn't DOB recently throw shade at him for asking tough questions in interviews? I'm not on Twitter, so I can't track it down.

I think this board was overly hard on DOB in the AJC days. He wasn’t there to write FanGraphs level analysis. He wrote stuff that the vast majority of Braves fans who still think of W/L record and RBI as important stats would enjoy reading. His blogs were lighthearted and entertaining enough that AJC had to make several tech upgrades to handle the traffic. He seems to have lost whatever organization contacts he used to have along with any sense of humility over the past few years, but his run at AJC was a success.

Sure. In those days, before social media really became a source for team news, you had to really follow the beat writers to know what was going on.

How people consume their info has changed, including the information they want. My issue with DOB is more that he gets in to arguments on twitter over things he doesn't really know about, or have insider information anymore. Like you said, his sources/contacts seem to ahve dried up.

The problem for beat writers these days is that the teams basically want them to be part of the franchise's PR arm. It's only when things turn into a turd salad that the writers can point out some of the issues.
