All-Star Starting Lineup Discussion

Just for ****s and giggles, talk about who was voted a starter, and who may be more deserving.

NL
C - Contreras - You could argue Will Smith, thankfully the homer vote of Realmuto who's been kind of meh (same basic stats as D'Arnaud)
1B - Harper - could debate Freeman with more games but Harper's stats are the best for a 1B,
2B - Marte - Easy lock
3B - Bohm - Could maybe debate Joey Ortiz, but I don't think it's much of an argument
SS - Turner - Joke. Elly should be starting, Turner's been good when playing but has 150 less PA than Elly.
OF - Yellich, Profar, Tatis - Yellis and Profar for sure Nimmo has more PA and better (though slightly) offensive stats than Tatis but this isn't a real snub
DH - Shohei - I mean it's obvious Ozuna is having a great season but Shohei is killing it

AL
C - Rutschman - Lock
1B - Vladdy - Naylor is a potential discussion, but they're basically the same
2B - Altuve - Westburg and Altuve were basically the same.
3B - Ramirez - Should probably be Devers but they're close and most of Devers's value has come in the most recent time.
SS - Gunnar - Gunnar is probably going to be AL MVP, Bobby Witt Jr is putting up an amazing season. But Gunnar has been better.
OF - Judge, Soto, Kwan - Kwan's PA is kind of rough, could maybe argue Duran or Castro but those are th etop 3 in fWAR.
DH - Alvarez - He and Rooker have the same stats so I don't care.

So what are everyone else's opinions?

I couldn't care less about the all stars, but I do care that the Brewers got Contreras for basically free. What an epic heist.

AA should have never traded him.

Yeah, I mean I get the logic of Murphy is a better catcher. But the age difference should have made you thought twice. But it's not like we gave up anyone other than Contreras. It's baffling the A's did that trade. I get they thought Estuery Ruiz would be a dude, but I wouldn't have bet on that. He's basically a 1 tool player. He can run.

The A's are the boneheads in that trade. Sure we have some egg on our face, but the A's traded by far the best player at the time and got by far the worst return at the time.

I would like to say that when the trade happened, I was very adamant that WC was the best player in that trade and that the Braves will regret trading him. I even said WC would be better than Murph that first year... I have no idea if I was right, but since Murphy turned into a part time player who hates hot weather, I think I was ultimately right. WC bat was just starting to become real, and I knew his arm was good.. framing is something that can be taught and shouldn't have been a factor in comparison. the biggest issue with me was age and cost.

The Braves were so dumb that I didn't care about how dumb the A's were.

Same.

Murphy was clearly the better talent overall but for sure it looks bad in retrospect when you see how many innings Contreras has caught the last 2 years instead of Murphy.

What aggravates me the most is that they traded for Murphy just to platoon him. Why spend the money and resources to get him just to play him every other game basically?

Hoping that isn’t a thing going forward. But if he is the guy he was the second half then he deserves to be a part time catcher.

That’s my biggest issue. You don’t trade a legit player in WC for a platoon. It’s one of the biggest no-nos of Snit’s career.

Same old, same old. I feel like the NL has lost 20 of these in a row, then remembered they won last year... They are 7-28 in their last 35 though.
