Andruw Jones and Skip Carey for the HOF?

Still Playing the Waiting Game
Andruw's career to me screams HOF. His defense alne should get him in like Brooks Robinson, Ozzie Smith and Bill Mazeroski, yet he was a better hitter than all of them (434 career homers, 67.1 career WAR, UZR of 17.8/150 games, career wRC+ of 111 (his 9 peak years it was around 130)

sure his career didn't last until age 38 but he started so young he still played for 16 years. IMO, if you can put an infielder in for defense, the greatest CF glove of all time deserves it too. especially with such power.

and now Skip Carey. For me, he WAS the voice of the Braves. Growing up his commentary made some of those awful seasons bareable with his unique style, voice, hilarious banter and jokes "like lambs to the slaughter, the Braves take the field". IMO, he has all the hallmarks of a HOF baseball broadcaster.

opinions?

to add to this, Andruw is presently 9th ALL TIME in Cf WAR, 5th in Cf homers (behind Mays, Mantle, Griffey Jr and Dawson) and wayy ahead in defense. I think it's hard to say Beltran is HOF'er and not say Andruw is too.

Andruw should be but his career fell off so fast that it will hard for him to gain momentum. But there is no doubt that for about a 10 year stretch he was one of the best players in baseball.

Unfortunately Andruw will always be remembered as a disappointment. He was described as having "unlimited potential", and he probably did. Since he was merely great rather than legendary I think folks will hold that against him.

I agree he should be in though. He was the greatest defensive CF of all time, and a very good (if frustrating) hitter. It's just too bad he didn't put in the work to make himself one of the top 10 players of all time because he certainly had the talent.

If he had stayed with the Braves his whole career I think he would get in the HoF. Theres something a little more special about being a one team player.

I think he makes it. The old fogeys just need to key up the tape of him in CF.

Absolutely HOF material.

TRY learn how Skip CARAY spells his name before beating your drum too loudly.

I took that same opinion at the time, but looking back on it with what we know now after the money ball movement, I think that argument was unfair to Andruw. I think he wasn't naturally a great hitter like Griffey or Bonds for example, and I think a lot of people thought that he should be. But I think he actually wound up hitting his peak offensively in his late 20's. And that was simply the best he could do.

I agree with that. The idea that he could of been better if he had just tried a little bit harder doesn't sit well with me. Sometimes players are simply as good as they are. Some players can't pick up that slider spin that goes down and away and we claim they are stupid because they swing at it.

I don't think his peak would have been much better, but he almost certainly would have aged better and racked up much more counting stats. There are stories about him coming to spring training so fat JS asked if he could still run the bases.

I think it's safe to say Andruws less than elite work ethic played a role in how quickly he declined.

That I can agree with. He never really kept himself in shape. That plus all the wear and tear in center took it's toll.
