Avilan threw 17 high stress pitches last night. He came into a tied game with runners on second and third and no outs. I know relievers are supposed to be able to pitch on consecutive days. But you take into account it is a day game after a night game and the kind of effort he put in last night, and I think there was a good case to go to either Simmons or Carpenter to start the 8th inning of today's game. Both of those guys had not pitched in two days.

Avilan has also received the Gearrin treatment from Fredi in the last 11 days of May. He pitched May 21, 23, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30, 31.

I'll repeat about Avilan what I said about Gearrin last year. He is a pitcher I'd like to see pitching effectively for us come October. The way he is being used makes it unlikely that that will be the case.

Fredi is a butcher when it comes to bullpen management.

Same story as last year. Avilan will be lucky to make it through the season.
 
Last year, Fredi might as well have repeatedly run over Avilan's left arm with his Harley. I didn't hold out a lot of hope for his health/effectiveness this year.
 
The thing is, he is being used so much despite his ineffectiveness this year. Fredi just keeps trotting him out there, and he keeps getting hammered.
