Batting Cages evolution

In high school in the early 80's, I thought the cages were canned, threw around 70, but not able to throw sinkers or curveballs.

Now at near 50, I was still able to hit them but the caveat, only fastballs up to 83 mph, but curves, sliders and sinkers, UGLY, never touched one.

I am in awe in what a MLB player had to see when facing a pitcher like Viz or others that can throw a 100 plus a slider or sinker or a Blyleven curveball.

I would bail as well.

Anyone still hit at batting cages regardless how old you are? I love it but I get a bruise on the palm of my hand. Wooden bats have so much vibration on contact, you feel it in your arm when you hit is squarely. Since they are both palms (switch hitter) it is worse.

I went to the batting cages about ten days ago. First time I have swung a bat in years. Think I started in 30 mph cage just to loosen up and that was so slow. Think it did more harm than good. Hit okay in the 45 mph cage, but my timing was all jacked up. I think I will try and play in a league this summer, but pitching will and always was my focal point.

I have softball (CoEd no restrictions). My goal is 2 homers a game. 20 for this year. I can't run and the coach (older than I) say don't so sliding is out. The fence is only 280' which is like Houston for me. The other parks in town for softball is like 310 lf lcrc rf and center is 320. About 4 years ago no problem, now, forget it unless I have unsanctioned bats (DiMarini's) which you can use in the tourney.

But at my age impressing the youngsters and older dudes getting around on an 83 mph is impressive to them, even more when you bat on both sides (I was late as hell on the left side, but like Markakis, I would wear out the left field line batting left handed no power though)

I am going to try and play softball this season for the first time. I have subbed on this team a couple times in the past. It's way too slow paced for me and batting is so boring. Stick me at shortstop and I am good. My mentality at the plate isn't suited for softball. My mindset will always be baseball. Which is why I suck at softball batting. Whatever though my defensive runs saved will be amazing.
