Brandon Drury gets the call

Brandon Druy, who was only 17 when the Braves drafted him and who I'm still convinced was given away as a throw-in to Arizona in the first Justin Upton deal, was called up today (Sept. 1) by the D-Backs. In the three years since the deal, he has hit .300 on average with a high of 23 homers (in Double-A last year.).

In fact, I am considering nominating this as one of the worst Braves trades of all time, thinking that keeping what we had would have been no worse than what resulted (maybe).

Braves acquired Justin Upton and Chris Johnson from Arizona for Martin Prado, Nick Ahmed, Brandon Drury, Randall Delgado and Zeke Spruill. Now, with Drury, all have made it to the majors for Arizona.

How could this possible be construed as a bad trade for us?

We got two really good years out of JUp in addition to Fried, Jace, DPeterson, and Mallex. Plus Chris Johnson gave us a big year in a 96 win campaign.

I said I was considering it. Upton and Johnson, at the end, were considered part of the big reason our team had no chemistry. But granted, the trade didn't exactly help Arizona, either, did it?
Frankly, my longstanding disgust of losing Drury just spilled over a little bit today. So I was a little blinded; who on this board isn't from time to time. But your point well taken.

How is it terrible?

Justin Upton and Chris Johnson gave us almost 10 fWAR over their time with the Braves.

Prado gave the Diamondbacks 2.9, Ahmed has given the Diamondbacks 0.9, Spruill 0.2 and Delgado 0.8.

With all the parts we gave up, we were bound to "lose" the long term. I discussed this a bit in the Olivera thread. Sellers most often win trades. It's the nature of trading someone for someone(s) with more years of control.

Now let's assess a bit more with expansive parts.

Prado was traded by the Diamondbacks for Peter O'Brien, still in the minors.

Ahmed is hitting so bad he would play on pretty much no one but a loser's team. Unless he starts hitting, he won't be in the majors for a logn time as anything more than a bench player.

Delgado struggled as a starter and was moved to the pen.

Spruill was traded for Mylex Smith, a guy who was converted to a reliever by Arizona.

So if we look at it, we have an unknown cause O'Brien has pretty good minorleague offensive numbers, same as Drury also an unknown, add that we are looking at most likely 2 relievers (Smith and Delgado) a utility IF (Ahmed) and we trade that for Justin Upton? It realyl makes the trade look better in retrospect.

Then you add that for our 3rd year of Justin, we turned him into Jace Peterson (who's much better than Ahmed) Dustin Peterson, an interesting LF prospect, Max Fried a high risk pitchign prospect with a high ceiling and Mallex Smith who may start CF for us next year it makes the trade look even better.

THe Justin upton trade is one of the best th eBraves ever made.

I've wanted Drury back for a long time, but have to agree it's pretty tough to ever see either J-Up trade (getting him or trading him) as much other than a pretty solid "win".

I remember that trade. Wren was like "Hey I dont think this is fair enough for you, please take Lucas Sims too. Oh you dont want him, well I insist you atleast take this kid Drury off our hands or no deal Mister!"

Oh, FYI, Gosselin, traded for Cahill in a real winner of a deal, homered with four RBIs for Arizona today.

Gosselin went in the Touki Toussaint and Bronson Arroyo trade, not the Cahill deal. The Cahill deal was bad enough either way.

Hated losing Drury... He was and probably still is the only real prospect for 3B. At the time he was playing 1B for some reason and I was assured we weren't losing anything!
