Braves trade for Pierce Johnson

yikes.. do they see something we don't?? dude is walking the league right now.. Someone help me with this who is more familar with him.

Without getting too deep into his numbers,

He is 1-5 this season with a 6.00 ERA in 39 IP, 43 games. Has a WHIP of 1.85 with 58K....

Right up AA's ally. Dudes gonna shove

I mean...you like the strikeout rate, certainly. He's pitching in Coors, so that mucks everything up. Velocity's still solid. Vodnik never seems to have advanced from "guy who puts up surprisingly good minor league numbers" to "actual prospect." So call it a massive shrug, I guess.

Johnson's velocity is up, he's striking out a ton of batters, and he's been very unlucky (3.98 xFIP, .408 BABIP)

The Rockies are one of the dumbest organizations, so it's no surprise AA chose to target them for bullpen help.

Bowman said we added Taylor Hearn as well, hoping for like cash considerations b/c he hasnt pitched since April. So yeah. Looking at the advanced numbers, i can see why AA went for Pierce Johnson. For Vodnik, i would have hoped for someone a little better. But not bad.

The K rate is impressive, that I can agree with.. Just hope Kranny saw something that they can traget to reduce walks. If so, then that is a steal.. we would control him for 3 years it looks like.

Mixed reports on the team control but he's only pitched for 3+ years so we'd have 2-3 years of control after this one. Some people saying he has no control left, some saying he does.

Victor seemed like he was around forever and never really improved enough.. not upset about trading him. I don't know who Grodon is... was he team chef?

There was some buzz around Gordon early this season because he had added velocity, but it didn't translate. Started the season in Mississippi, went up to Gwinnett for a bit, and returned to Mississippi.

I thought is was a bit odd when Vodnik was stationed in Mississippi this season after pitching in Gwinnett in 2022 (and had decent numbers). Like MFII said, surface stats always looked good, but that can be misleading.

I could be dead wrong (again), but I expect it's deals like this one that we'll see.

Our farm is depleted, so we dont have a ton to offer unless teams will take a chance on Schuster or Dodd.

There may be interest in those two (especially Shuster), but I am hard-pressed to think they would land one of the top-tier guys. I think our best chance to touch the upper-tier may be something like Grissom-for-Giolito.

But basically you're right. If there's a bidding war for any of the top-tier guys, we would have to surrender quality because we don't really have the quantity.

Braves just announced the deal, Luetge designated for assignment.

We dont really need someone like Giolito though. I'd aim for someone like Montgomery if the cost is similar to this one.

I sort of like this deal the more I sit on it. His control beyond this year being another topic.. I like the lottery style play here. He clearly can get you out via the K.. so he has stuff. If our staff can adjust or tweek something that can get the walks down to even 4 per 9 and like SJ said, luck reverts to norm, then we are looking at a Jackson/Matzek type add.

He pitched in Japan, so I bet it's the same deal as with Tom Martin and he doesn't have arb years
