Cano tests positive for PEDs yet again

I don't think it is a coincidence that this happened right after new ownership. Gives Cohen 24 million more to spend.

If baseball - in general (players or owners) - had any REAL interest in solving the PED problem it's an unbelievably simple fix.

Any organization that has a player test positive doesn't get that money "freed-up" to spend on a player to replace the idiot that's cheating. If ownership was required to donate those funds to various charities rather than go out and sign another 2B, standard contract language would change real *ucking quick. If there are any questions about which players (or the Union overall) or owners were legitimately concerned about the game being "clean", you'd find out in a heartbeat.

80-game "slap on the hand" suspensions would disappear instantly - standard contract language would suddenly reflect that the first positive test terminated the contract, NO MATTER how much time was left on it.

I wonder if mlb would consider punishing teams too. Make them self police this more. Something like reducing that teams luxury tax threshold by the contract amount.

You guys nailed this. The team should carry the penalty beyond the player.
I have a hard time blaming the player in some instances- if I could take the neeedle and make ten mil for my family and play in the show, I don’t know what my moral compass would read.
But the orgs know damn well what is going on and at least should anyway. The org should lose that money.
Not saying I woulda been happy If Druw or Javy tested positive, but I’m just sayin’...

I think it is a net wash for the team. Having cano at second was one problem they didn’t have to fill. Now they need to. And only on a one year deal or someone who can play other positions.

But 24 million is a nice chunk to be playing with for a rental. Shouldn’t cost that much.

You're right about it being a wash, but would have been a real gift if they didn't have to pay Cano for 2 more years after this. That limits what they can do with the money this year.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but I don't think a team should be completely off the hook for the salary of a suspended player. It could lead to shenanigans, or maybe even sabotage, to get out of a contract. Instead, that, or a portion of that salary should go to some anti-drug or youth sports charity. The player doesn't get it, and the team doesn't get to keep it.
