For those with Children: Are Your Children Vaccinated With Chicken Pox

All three of mine were vaccinated. All three had to be in order to attend public school.

Even though chicken pox is not a serious disease for school age children.

Chicken pox kills about 150 people per year in this country.

It is estimated that the vaccine mandate for school children saves 100 lives per year.

Mostly it helps vulnerable populations. Infants, pregnant women, the unborn.

For those with infants or yet to be born children, do you plan to have them vaccinated against chicken pox when they reach the right age.

I have no aversion on vaccinations that do what they are supposed to do and have long term real world data on their efficacy and side effects.

We were actually hoping to expose our kids to chicken pox like we were... but its freaking hard to find cases now with the vaccine. So we just ended up vaccinating them so they may not get hit as hard later in life with shingles. The vaccine doesn't negate the chance of shingles later in life but it certainly makes it less likely. We researched this a lot... and the vaccine and natural immunity for the pox seems about equal for shingles later in life.

i believe btw that school mandates do not allow the option of providing an antibodies test for those who would like to opt out...so even if your kids had gotten chicken pox they would still have had to take the shots...no school district that i know of is interested in adding that layer of administrative complexity...they want to keep it simple

Don't believe our school system is as restrictive. I believe parents can opt out here if they want. But that may have changed... not sure.

Btw anyone with an infant right now should know that this infant is being protected from chicken pox (which can be a serious illness for infants) by the decisions of millions of strangers to have their children vaccinated against it. And by mandates requiring this in every state.

Given the way school administrator jobs have sprung up like weeds over the past couple of decades and exploded cost per student metrics, I’d hope they would be able to handle such “administrative complexity.”

For those of you weighing the pros and cons of the chicken pox vaccine for your children, here is a (somewhat dated) paper on efficacy and side effects. And interestingly enough, a little bit on cost-benefit from a societal point of view.

Just be aware it is not 100% effective.

Varicella vaccine is 70% to 90% effective for preventing varicella and more than 95% effective for preventing severe varicella.

Btw, chickenpox is such a mild thing a lot of countries don't mandate vaccination against it. But we hyper-vigilant Americans do.

Some countries go with one dose. But we go with two. Plus a shingles booster later in life.
