GDT 4/24/26: Braves vs Phillies - Interesting Lineup Adjustment

The Phillies are in a tough spot. They have long term, big dollar deals that prevent them from really rebuilding. But the future is bleak. The present seems bleak, and the future is worse. But they’re locked into these deals and don’t have nearly enough young players worth a damn. They have, like, two.

If the Phillies were willing to eat money, I could see quite a few guys having some trade value. But like others have mentioned, there’s not really anyone on that roster with much surplus value given the contracts and age outside of maybe Sanchez

Is Holmes also out of options?

The Braves signed depth players who have turned out to be good depth players.

The injuries came early rather than late.

Probably short a starter, but AA is going to stay within his lines. Which is good for GM but upsetting for fans.

None of the panic moves were made and that's good.

I recall the narratives being:

1). He signed guys to market value deals so that makes it an average offseason
2). He didn’t sign a SP so that makes it bad.

For point 1, I think it’s just objectively wrong. Kim was below market. Dubón trade was below market. And sure, Iglesias and Suarez may have been market value. But they’re smart, low-risk market value deals. And suring up the backend of the bullpen is pretty important.

I was annoyed he didn’t acquire a starter. But all of those backend guys some of us wanted have been shit. Elder and Holmes have been way better than Bassitt. And so I think AA wanted a clear TOR arm or nothing, because the internal options were as good or better than the backend options. I didn’t want cease for his deal or Suarez for his, which leaves trades, and no one big got traded this offseason.

This is pretty much where I’m at. I was happy with the offensive additions and additions to the bench. I like the upgrades in the bullpen and was hoping he would add a starter to push homes and or Lopez to the pen to even make it more elite. But him standing pat on the pitching seems to be the much smarter move at this point so props to AA for that.

Holmes has been out of options since we called him up

Harper is not to far upside down honestly. He is owed a lot and wrong side of 30. But he is still good. But I don’t know how good defensively he is anywhere but first. That is his big kicker right now. That and I don’t see Philly trading him
Might be motivated to be on a real winning team.

He’s been a terrible defensive 1B too. Worst defensive metrics across all players all positions in MLB this year

And that's their issue. It's not like they can simply reload/retool after making a few trades and tanking this season. They'd likely be in for some sort of lengthy rebuild if they decide to sell.

Dombrowski was going for the quick fix like he won a WS in Boston with Wren then their team aged and sucked and they both got kicked out.

Phillies did make it to WS. .

Now their team is basically too old with no quality young players.

They’ve done a really poor job at development too. They somehow churned out Sanchez and he’s a beast. But there isn’t a single other notable Dombrowski-picked player that has done a thing. It’s only been 5 or 6 drafts, but not a single player has made an impact. And there wasn’t much in the pipeline before him either.
