GDT 5/18 Braves vs Jays : Stewed Beef edition

I'd argue their moves up until the HO trade had 2017 on their mind.

I would say the HO trade was the straw that broke the 2017 back. That move proves they wanted to win in 2017. It failed and they fell back and dug in. they made some minor signings this off season to save face, but know they didn't succeed in their original goal. It happens. I am just glad they didn't do anything stupid to continue to win in 2017.

Could be, but if that is the case, we've got the wrong team of guys in place. I think if Olivera had given us a decent RH hitter at 3B and resources would have been devoted to getting another bat, we might have been alright this season. I still don't think we would have been contenders.

Well if Olivera worked out like they wanted they probably keep Miller and Simmons. And they clearly hoping Wisler would be an average starter. So you'd be looking at a rotation of Julio, Miller, Folty, and Wisler if everything works out. They likely still target Kemp who was a straight salary dump.

So yeah I could see how that team could contend if everything worked out. When it was obvious that was not the case they went into a deeper rebuild starting with the Miller and Simmons trades. I feel that was the time to trade Julio but unfortunately he was coming off of a down year.

This would be my take too.
