GDT 7/12/22: Braves vs Mets - Turning It Around and Bringing the Heat

For those wondering, Rosario has been pretty awful in his short time back. He probably has 2 more weeks worth of PAs to show something before AA trades for another LFer.

I just wonder where that roster spot is going to come from. As you pointed out many times, AA foolishly gave Rosatio two years, so he can't simply cut him. Now he'll have to leave him on the bench.

Maybe. I'll be pretty surprised if AA just eats 18 million in salary though

Rosario has been unbelievably terrible. And I mean exactly what I say, unbelievably bad. Like I don't think there's any way he could be as bad as he's been without there being something wrong. His vision issues made sense and it wouldn't surprise me if he's still not 100% in that regard.

Captain SSS here, and y'all making me blush reading so much into 27 PA for Rosario. This from someone who loves to extrapolate whole seasons on 75 or so PA

Braves have 16(?) games before the deadline. That should be enough time for Rosario to get up to ~75 PAs. Not a huge sample, but if all the predictive stats are still terrible I think AA has to make a move.

His batted-ball metrics are ... not good. Even though he's hugely underperformed his xwoba, that xwoba is nevertheless an unsightly .223. That two-year deal is looking to beat out Will Smith as Anthopoulos' worst move as GM—in half the number of years.

If the Braves are going to upgrade LF, it's likely the have to eat the contract—either through DFA, or by taking on another bad contract that might have a chance to help them at another position. Any overpaid relievers out there we could swap for Rosario?

First, I don't think we can be hard on AA for Will Smith's signing after what Will did in the playoffs last year. It wasn't a great contract decision by AA but it actually ended up paying off big time.

Next, I agree that Rosario's batted ball metrics are bad. The question is why. His xwoba is almost 100 points lower than last year. I gotta think that has more to do with him struggling to see/judge the ball than a natural, age related collapse. It's why I can't judge AA too harshly on this. A retina issue is hard to see coming (no pun intended).

Is there a way to get Rosario's xwoba for his return games only sample?

Since his return, his batted-ball metrics have been better, but nor great: 88.7 EV, 101.6 max EV, 4.8% barrel-rate, 33.3% hard-hit. A ton of medium-quality fly-balls, essentially.

I will never forget World Series Hero Will Smith.

Nevertheless, long-term contracts for relievers simply aren't best practice, even if they happen to go off for one of the best postseason runs by a closer ever.

xwOBA in July: .177

2 of his 5 hits since returning were dribbled grounders to the left side.

He's been terrible, and AA probably needs to get an OFer who can actually hit. I imagine Rosario has 2 weeks to save his job, and Duvall already lost his.

Why AA thought Duvall/Rosario were the answer to the OF holes a few months after getting them for free is still beyond me. It would be like using an old spare donut tire to get home, and then thinking you can go drag race with it the next day rather than actually fixing the bad tire.

Maybe because Rosario had a career .800 OPS vs RHP, and Duvall mashes lefties. He got Rosario for free last year because he was hurt and on an expiring contract. Context matters.

Having said that, I always wanted another outfielder and a Rosario/Duvall platoon after Rosario was signed. And before he was signed, I wanted someone better. But, still, your constant overstating of how bad Rosario is is annoying. A Rosario/Duvall platoon if they play to their career averages is more than acceptable.
