GDT 8/14/24: Braves @ Giants - Harris Returns

Did we find something in Holmes?

Yes, not gonna be the best SP but as a reliever and swingman he is too notch. We should have 6 more years of team control too. He was a former first round picks and too prospect. His weakness has always been control and that's kind of flipped into a strength.

He's looked pretty damn good as a starter in a small sample

I think he is better than a lot of teams 5th starter. I would just never want to go into a season with him as the 5th starter. We really need him back in the pen.

As a starter, Holmes has a 4.57 ERA with a 3.87 FIP. He also Ks's about 3 more batters/9 innings as a starter.

Maybe Holmes can be the new Matzek in the pen. Or may be he can be viable MOR SP.

Realistically the only team I'm concerned with now is the Mets. Rest of the teams behind us are falling off a bit. A sweep today would really put the Giants in a tough spot.

The Padres and Dbacks wont stay at this pace. They’ll tail off at some point.

Can we go ahead and claim Amed Rosario and get rid of this Whit Merrifield experiment? I know technically Whit is getting on base well, but this is a mirage. His EV is down to just 80.4 with us. He makes Keith Lockhart look like Babe Ruth

They will for sure tail off when they have to play each other and the Dodgers to finish the year. The Diamondbacks and Phillies both have very tough schedules to finish the year. But no one has a tougher schedule than the Mets, who play 26 out of their remaining 40 games against teams with better records than the Mets current record. And of those 26 games, only 9 of them are played at home.

OTOH, we have a schedule that favors us to finish the season. We have only 6 series left vs teams currently with winning records, and 4 of those series will be played at home. We can't afford to split or lose series against our weaker opponents though.

We’ve played this song and dance too many times, but the vibes are really good right now. it’s like they win a few, take a tough loss, and get discouraged. There’s no problem with losing some games, they just need to keep the intensity. I think the Rockies debacle may have been a swift kick in the nuts.

Need to lock in a spot (any spot), so we can line up sale, fried, SS/lopez for WC series

wonder what the news on Soler will be today.

I mean even twit (someone told him) knew that Soler has been a DH all year and now playing the OF, that he might need some rest.. so twit takes that info and goes to Soler and says, I want to give you a day off and Soler says I want to play and twit says, your that guy.. ok you can play.

Wonder if they think about rotating Ozuna and Soler some to give Soler some time at DH.. Don't really like the idea of his bat being out of the lineup at this point in the season.

His statcast data and peripherals suggest he could be more than a 5th starter

I am on the Holmes bandwagon but I am going to need to see more as a SP. With the offense we have we need top tier SP. A straight 4 ERA SP wins a lot of games but not for us. I think he has tremendous value. I don't know if teams asked for him at trade deadline but they should have. He can kind of be whatever we need. Starter. Long reliever. Setup man. And he came up late enough we still have 6 years of team control after this year. I think he is most valuable as a swing man who can eat innings out of the pen or spot start when we need. I would like to see him get about 100 IP a year in that role.

Holmes is a hard cookie to crack for me. He is getting great results but there is nothing extremely special about any of his pitches. His 4seamer is average all the way around but he must locate the hell out of it because it is killing hitters. then he has a slider and curve that he mixes in for the whiff pitch. neither are incredible.. more of a downer type pitch without much horizontal movement. then he tinkers with a cutter (statcast also says change, but I think they are probably the same pitch a lot of times).. but that is a show me pitch really.

so I think he can remain a Middle type pitcher as long as he doesn't walk a lot of hitters like he is doing. I just don't see the pure stuff that makes him a real thing.. although, he is getting results right now and that definitely counts for something.

I think BP/ opener would be most effective deployment of him personally. (assuming all the other starters are healthy.. he is better than Elder of course)

What I want to see is the control next year. Pitchers with a long track record of failure I need to see them carry it over an off-season. Like Kyle Wright.
